This Day's Thought

In truth, sublime words make not a man holy and just: but a virtuous life maketh him dear to God.

Thomas à Kempis

This Day's Verse

But the Lord is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King. At His wrath the earth will tremble, And the nations will not be able to endure His indignation.

This Day's Smile

This Day's Verse

As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him.

This Day's Thought

O Lord, give us all, we beseech Thee, grace and strength to overcome every sin; sins of besetment, deliberation, surprise, negligence, omission; sins against Thee, our self, our neighbor; sins great, small, remembered, forgotten.

Christina Rossetti

This Day's Verse

O Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his steadfast love endures for ever!

Psalm 118:1
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

The story is told of a man who got a permit to open the first tavern in a small town. The members of a local church were strongly opposed to the bar, so they began to pray that God would intervene. A few days before the tavern was scheduled to open, lightning hit the structure and it burned to the ground. The people of the church were surprised but pleased—until they received notice that the would-be tavern owner was suing them. He contended that their prayers were responsible for the burning of the building. The church members, however, vehemently denied that their prayers had anything to do with the fire. As the case made its way into court, the judge looked over the paperwork at the hearing and commented: “I don’t know how I’m going to decide this, but as it appears from the paperwork, we have a bar owner who believes in the power of prayer, and an entire church congregation that does not”.

This Day's Smile

A farmer promised to give the Lord one of the twin calves his cow delivered. His wife asked him, “which calf is the Lord’s?” He answered, “It really doesn’t make any difference whose calf is whose. I’ll give God one of them when they’ve grown.” A few weeks later he came into the farmhouse, sadness hanging on his face. His wife asked, “What’s wrong?” He replied, “Well, the Lord’s calf died this morning.
