This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

Sin is not exhausted in describing individual acts which aren’t very nice. “Sin” is fundamentally a description of our entire situation, one of separation from God, alienation from him, arising out of our rebellion, our refusal to do his will, our insistence upon following our own wills.

John Stott

This Day's Verse

And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love.

2 John 1:6
The New International Version

This Day's Reprise

Lord, the Scripture says: “There is a time for silence and a time for speech.” Saviour, teach me the silence of humility, the silence of wisdom, the silence of love, the silence of perfection, the silence that speaks without words, the silence of faith. Lord, teach me to silence my own heart that I may listen to the gentle movement of the Holy Spirit within me and sense the depths which are of God.

Frankfurt prayer (Sixteenth century)

This Day's Thought

The greatest of all sins is the philosophizing of sin out of existence.

Harold C. Gardiner

This Day's Verse

Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding; For her proceeds are better than the profits of silver, And her gain than fine gold.

Proverbs 3:13-14
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile

When the heart weeps for what it has lost, the spirit laughs for what it has found.

This Day's Thought

When God punishes sinners, He does not inflict His evil on them, but leaves them to their own evil.

Augustine

This Day's Verse

And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.

1 John 5:14

This Day's Thought

O God, though our sins be seven, though our sins be seventy times seven, though our sins be more in number than the hairs of our head, yet give us grace in loving penitence to cast ourselves down into the depths of Thy compassion.

Christina Rossetti

This Day's Verse

Come, bless the LORD, all you servants of the LORD, who stand by night in the house of the LORD! Lift up your hands to the holy place, and bless the LORD! May the LORD bless you from Zion, he who made heaven and earth!

Psalm 134
The Revised Standard Version

People are unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered. Love them anyway.

This Day's Thought

Grant O Lord, that we may live in Thy fear, die in Thy favor, rest in Thy peace, rise in Thy power, reign in Thy glory.

William Laud

This Day's Verse

A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.

This Day's Thought

It is hard to say what is worse, to injure others by words or to listen to one who does.

Bernard of Clairvaux

This Day's Verse

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile

“A still small voice” comes through the wild,
Like a father consoling his fretful child,
Which banishes bitterness, wrath, and fear,
Saying—Man is distant, but God is near!

Thomas Pringle

This Day's Thought

O Lord, give us all, we beseech Thee, grace and strength to overcome every sin; sins of besetment, deliberation, surprise, negligence, omission; sins against Thee, our self, our neighbor; sins great, small, remembered, forgotten.

Christina Rossetti

This Day's Verse

O Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his steadfast love endures for ever!

Psalm 118:1
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

The story is told of a man who got a permit to open the first tavern in a small town. The members of a local church were strongly opposed to the bar, so they began to pray that God would intervene. A few days before the tavern was scheduled to open, lightning hit the structure and it burned to the ground. The people of the church were surprised but pleased—until they received notice that the would-be tavern owner was suing them. He contended that their prayers were responsible for the burning of the building. The church members, however, vehemently denied that their prayers had anything to do with the fire. As the case made its way into court, the judge looked over the paperwork at the hearing and commented: “I don’t know how I’m going to decide this, but as it appears from the paperwork, we have a bar owner who believes in the power of prayer, and an entire church congregation that does not”.

For what is faith unless it is to believe what you do not see?

Augustine

None but God can satisfy the longings of an immortal soul; that as the heart was made for Him, so He only can fill it.

Richard Chenevix Trench

This Day's Verse

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

This Day's Thought

God, who is everywhere, never leaves us. Yet he seems sometimes to be present, sometimes absent. If we do not know him well, we do not realize that he may be more present to us when he is absent than when he is present.

Thomas Merton

This Day's Verse

For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. That is why he is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant.

Hebrews 9:14-15
The New Living Translation
