This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

It is of the very essence of faith that we should believe that what Jesus says is true. So often we have a kind of vague, wistful longing that the promises of Jesus should be true. The only way really to enter into them is to believe them with the clutching intensity of a drowning man.

William Barclay

This Day's Verse

And what does he desire? Godly offspring.

Malachi 2:15
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

The luxuries we indulge in eventually come to seem to be necessities, as if we could not live without them.

This Day's Thought

If you insist on having your own way, you will get it. Hell is the enjoyment of your own way forever. If you really want God’s way with you, you will get it in heaven.

Dante Alighieri

This Day's Verse

And he said to them, “Take heed what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you.”

Mark 4:24
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

I am more afraid of my own heart than of the pope and all his cardinals.

This Day's Thought

Of all human pursuits the pursuit of wisdom is the most perfect, the most sublime, the most profitable, the most delightful.

Thomas Aquinas

This Day's Verse

All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted.

Matthew 23:12
The New Revised Standard Version

This Day's Thought

The rich man is not one who is in possession of much, but one who gives much.

John Chrysostom

This Day's Verse

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, And whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, Which spreads out its roots by the river, And will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, And will not be anxious in the year of drought, Nor will cease from yielding fruit.”

Jeremiah 17:7-8
The New King James Version

This Day's Reprise

If you want to live twice as long, eat half as much, sleep twice as much, drink water three times as much, and laugh four times at much.

This Day's Thought

One of the weaknesses of our age is our apparent inability to distinguish our needs from our greeds.

Donald William Bradley Robinson

This Day's Verse

“Do you know this from of old, From the establishment of man on earth, That the triumphing of the wicked is short, And the joy of the godless momentary?”

Job 20:4-5
The New American Standard Bible

This Day's Reprise

Live your human task in the liberating certainty that nothing in the world can separate you from God’s love for you.

This Day's Thought

Do not call yourself Lutherans, call yourself Christians. Has Luther been crucified for the world?

Martin Luther

This Day's Verse

Human pride will be brought down, and human arrogance will be humbled. Only the Lord will be exalted on that day of judgment.

Isaiah 2:11
The New Living Translation

This Day's Smile

A farmer promised to give the Lord one of the twin calves his cow delivered. His wife asked him, “which calf is the Lord’s?” He answered, “It really doesn’t make any difference whose calf is whose. I’ll give God one of them when they’ve grown.” A few weeks later he came into the farmhouse, sadness hanging on his face. His wife asked, “What’s wrong?” He replied, “Well, the Lord’s calf died this morning.

This Day's Thought

I learned the interior of life was as rewarding as the exterior life, and that my richest moments occurred when I was absolutely still.

Richard Bode

This Day's Verse

“In all this I have given you an example that by such work we must support the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, for he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

Sympathy is especially a Christian duty.

Charles H. Spurgeon

This Day's Verse

“This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.”

Luke 8:11-15
The New International Version

This Day's Thought

As to all that we have and are, we are but stewards of the Most High God. On all our possessions, on our time, and talents, and influence, and property, he has written, “Occupy for me, and till I shall come.” To obey his instructions and serve him faithfully, is the true test of obedience and discipleship.

Charles Simmons

This Day's Verse

But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness,

2 Timothy 2:16

This Day's Thought

Sin is like some distempers of the eyes that make things to appear of different colours from those which properly belong to them.

Jonathan Edwards

This Day's Verse

“No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”

Luke 16:13
The New Revised Standard Version

This Day's Reprise

There’s not much practical Christianity in the man who lives on better terms with angels and seraphs than with his children, servants and neighbours.
