This Day’s Thought-Tuesday & Update

Dear Friends in Christ,

As we enter this season of thanksgiving, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude for you—our readers—who share with us in daily worship of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

We continue to prayerfully offer our best in Christian thought through these brief “seeds for the day,” meant to inspire and encourage you in your walk with God.

This coming January marks our 27th year together. As we have traditionally done each November, we invite those who feel led to support this ministry financially. Your gifts and pledges are a true blessing, enabling us to plan for another year of sharing God’s truth and encouragement around the world.

Thank you for your prayers, encouragement, and faithful support. It is a joy and privilege to serve you.

In His Love,
Greg for This Day’s Thought

This Day's Thought

Have you wept for your sin so that you were indeed sorrowful in your spirit? Are you so sorrowful that you hate it? Do you so hate it that you have left it?

Jeremy Taylor

This Day's Verse

The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

John 1:17
The New Revised Standard Version

This Day's Reprise

God doesn’t call people who are qualified. He calls people who are willing, and then He qualifies them.

This Day's Thought

Riches, honors, and pleasures are the sweets which destroy the mind’s appetite for its heavenly food; poverty, disgrace, and pain are the bitters which restore it.

George Horne

This Day's Verse

Not a single person on earth is always good and never sins.

Ecclesiastes 7:20
The New Living Translation

This Day's Smile

The first time a thing occurs in nature, it is called a miracle; later it becomes natural, and no attention is paid to it. Let your worship and your service be a fresh miracle every day to you.

This Day's Thought

Make use of time, if thou valuest eternity. Yesterday cannot be recalled; tomorrow cannot be assured; today only is thine, which, if thou procrastinatest, thou losest; which loss is lost forever.

Jeremy Taylor

This Day's Verse

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

1 Peter 2:24
The King James Version

This Day's Smile

Life is fragile, handle with prayer.

This Day's Thought

Sin is never at a stay; if we do not retreat from it, we shall advance in it; and the farther on we go, the more we have to come back.

Issac Barrow

This Day's Verse

As for me, I call to God, and the Lord saves me. Evening, morning and noon I cry out in distress, and he hears my voice. He rescues me unharmed from the battle waged against me, even though many oppose me.

Psalm 55:16-18
The New International Version

This Day's Smile

A wise man reflects before he speaks; a fool speaks, and then reflects on what he has uttered.

This Day's Thought

No passion or affection, with which we are born, can be in itself sinful; it becomes so, only by wilful or careless indulgence.

Jonathan Mayhew

This Day's Verse

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

2 Corinthians 5:17

This Day's Thought

Each of us takes his place in the center of his own world. But I am not the center of the world, or the standard of reference as between good and bad; I am not, and God is. In other words, from the beginning I put myself in God’s place. This is my original sin.

William Temple

This Day's Verse

Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole.

Job 5:17-18
The King James Version

This Day's Reprise

The love of Christ becomes the mightiest force in the world to the man who is yielded to it.

This Day's Thought

As the prudent vintager eats only ripe grapes, and gathers not those which are green, so the eyes of a wise man rests only upon the virtue in others; whereas the eyes of the fool seeks only to discover in his neighbor vices and defects.

John Climacus

This Day's Verse

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

1 Corinthians 12:4-7
The English Standard Version

This Day's Reprise

God could not have chosen anyone less qualified, or more of a sinner, than myself. And so, for this wonderful work He intends to perform through us, He selected me—for God always chooses the weak and the absurd, and those who count for nothing.

Francis of Assisi

This Day's Thought

What do we mean by “success” anyway? Success by whose standards? The Bible teaches that God is the final Judge before whom we shall all stand one day. God will then proclaim us successful or unsuccessful.

Bill Krisher

This Day's Verse

People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy.

Proverbs 28:13
The New Living Translation

This Day's Reprise

Duty and today are ours; results and the future belong to God.

This Day's Thought

So long as we are full of self we are shocked at the faults of others. Let us think often of our own sin, and we shall be lenient to the sins of others.

François de Fénelon

This Day's Verse

“Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

Matthew 17:20
The New International Version

This Day's Smile

Not until each loom is silent
And the shuttles cease to fly,
Will God unroll the pattern
And explain the reason why
The dark threads are as needful
In the Weaver’s skillful hand
As the threads of gold and silver
For the pattern which He planned.

This Day's Thought

A man can be as truly a saint in a factory as in a monastery, and there is as much need of him in the one as in the other.

Robert J. McCracken

This Day's Verse

Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long. For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.

Proverbs 23:17-18
The King James Version

This Day's Reprise
