This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

The only significance of life consists in helping to establish the kingdom of God; and this can be done only by means of the acknowledgment and profession of the truth by each one of us.

Leo Tolstoy

This Day's Verse

You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.

Micah 7:19
The New International Version

This Day's Smile

The true measure of loving God is to love Him without measure.

Bernard of Clairvaux

This Day's Thought

If Christ comes to rule in the hearts of men, it will be because we take Him with us on the tractor, behind the desk, when we’re making a sale to a customer, or when we’re driving on the road.

Alexander Nunn

This Day's Verse

Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness’ sake, O LORD.

Psalm 25:7
The King James Version

This Day's Reprise

Contentment comes when we remember that what God chooses is far better than what we choose.

This Day's Thought

Humility is the only response we should have towards a God who has given everything for our sake.

John Calvin

This Day's Verse

Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

James 4:17
The King James Version

This Day's Smile

J. Hudson Taylor, visiting D. L. Moody in Chicago, was invited to preach at Moody’s church.  At end of service Moody announced they were going to take an offering and Hudson Taylor, who was the guest speaker, came onstage and said. “No, we have a non-solicitation policy.”  Moody thought he was crazy.  Lo and behold the next day a man brings Taylor a check for $5000 and tells him, “If I gave yesterday at church I would have only given you $5.”  We live in a world where we are probably overly dependent on our human efforts to do God’s work, whereas we are called to a simple faith.

James Hudson Taylor IV

This Day's Thought

No sin is small.  It is against an infinite God, and may have consequences immeasurable.

Jeremy Taylor

This Day's Verse

Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge!  How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways!

Romans 11:33
The New Living Translation

This Day's Thought

My faith hath no bed to sleep upon but omnipotency.

Samuel Rutherford

This Day's Verse

How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart?  Cleanse me from these hidden faults.

Psalm 19:12
The New Living Translation

This Day's Reprise

Joy is not gush; joy is not jolliness.  Joy is just perfect acquiescence in God’s will because the soul delights itself in God Himself.

This Day's Thought

The dominion of any sinful habit will fearfully estrange us from His presence.  A single consenting act of inward disobedience in thought or will is enough to let fall a cloud between Him and us, and to leave our hearts cheerless and dark.

Henry E. Manning

This Day's Verse

O Lord, be gracious to us; we wait for thee.  Be our arm every morning, our salvation in the time of trouble.

Isaiah 33:2
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

The life of the church is not without a resurrection, nay, it is not without many resurrections.

John Calvin

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

You are never to complain of your birth, your training, your employments, your hardships; never to fancy that you could be something if only you had a different lot and sphere assigned you.  God understands His own plan, and He knows what you need a great deal better than you do.  The very things that you most deprecate, as fatal limitations or obstructions, are probably what you most need.  What you call hindrances, obstacles, or discouragements, are probably God’s opportunities.  Bring down your soul, of, rather, bring it up to receive God’s will and do His work, in your lot, in your sphere, under your cloud of obscurity, against your temptations—and then you shall find that your condition is never opposed to your good, but really consistent with it.

Horace Bushnell

This Day's Verse

I am determined not to sin in what I say.

Psalm 17:3
The New Living Translation

This Day's Reprise

There is no use in talking as if forgiveness were easy.  For we find that the work of forgiveness has to be done over and over again.

C. S. Lewis
