This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

Prayer is not an argument with God to persuade him to move things our way, but an exercise by which we are enabled by his Spirit to move ourselves his way.

Leonard Ravenhill

This Day's Verse

Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord.  See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain.  You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.

James 5:7-8
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile

Does God seem far away?  Guess who moved?

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

Doesn’t God’s Word come to us like a soft rain shower, dispelling the fury of the flames?  Isn’t it like fireproof armor, against which heat is powerless?  Then let afflictions come, for God has chosen me.  Poverty, you may walk through my door, but God is already in my house, and He has chosen me.  Sickness, you my intrude into my life, but I have a ready cure—God has chosen me.  Dear Christian, don’t be afraid, for Jesus is with you.  Through all your fiery trials, His presence is both your comfort and safety.  He’ll never forsake those He has chosen for His own.

Charles H. Spurgeon

This Day's Verse

But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath.

Psalm 78:38
The King James Version

This Day's Thought

God is within all things but not included; outside all things, but not excluded; above all things, but not beyond their reach.

Gregory the Great

This Day's Verse

But Jesus said, “Your error is caused by your ignorance of the Scriptures and of God’s power!”

Matthew 22:29
The Living Bible

This Day's Smile

The more urgently you want to speak, the more likely it is that you will say something foolish.

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

I believe in God as I believe in my friends, because I feel the breath of his affection, feel his invisible and intangible hand, drawing me, leading me, grasping me, because I possess an inner consciousness of a particular providence and of a universal mind that marks out for me the course of my destiny.

Miguel de Unamuno

This Day's Verse

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

Romans 1:18
The English Standard Version

This Day's Thought

If there be ground for you to trust in your own righteousness, then all that Christ did to purchase salvation, and all that God did to prepare the way for it, is in vain.

Jonathan Edwards

This Day's Verse

I will recount the steadfast love of the Lord, the praises of the Lord, according to all that the Lord has granted us, and the great goodness to the house of Israel which he has granted them according to his mercy, according to the abundance of his steadfast love.

Isaiah 63:7
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

How good a person feels when, exhausted from striving for goodness in his everyday life, he stretches out his hands to God.

Blaise Pascal

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

Life is a hard fight, a struggle, a wrestling with the Principle of Evil, hand to hand, foot to foot.  Every inch of the way must be disputed.  The night is given us to take breath, to pray, to drink deep at the fountain of power.  The day, to use the strength which has been given us, to go forth to work with it till the evening.

Florence Nightingale

This Day's Verse

But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Matthew 4:4
The English Standard Version

This Day's Thought

Faith without ethical consequences is a lie.  God does not need our sacrifices but he has, nevertheless, appointed a representative to receive them, namely our neighbor.  The neighbor always represents the invisible Christ.

J. S. Whale

This Day's Verse

The purpose of these laws is to cause you, your sons, and your grandsons to reverence the Lord your God by obeying all of his instructions as long as you live; if you do, you will have long, prosperous years ahead of you.

Deuteronomy 6:2
The Living Bible

This Day's Smile

The church is a hospital for sinners, not a rest home for saints.

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

For some who pray expecting an answer, it takes a long time to learn that delays of answers are not denials.  There are deep secrets of love and wisdom that we have never imagined awaiting us.  We tend to want to pick our blessings from the tree while they are still green, yet God wants us to wait until they’re fully ripe.  Do not doubt His love.  Instead, lift up your eyes and begin praising Him right now for the deliverance that is on its way to you.  Then you’ll be abundantly rewarded for the delay that has tried your faith.

L. B. Cowman

This Day's Verse

He who restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.

Proverbs 17:27
The Revised Standard Version

This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

Gratitude is not only the dominant note in Christian piety but equally the dominant motive of Christian action in the world.  Such gratitude is for the grace that has been shown us by God.  A true Christian is a man who never for a moment forgets what God has done for him in Christ, and whose whole comportment and whole activity have their root in the sentiment of gratitude.

John Baillie

This Day's Verse

Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

Psalm 51:12
The New International Version

This Day's Smile

Why do you worry?  What possible use does your worrying serve?  You are aboard such a large ship that you would be unable to steer even if your Captain placed you at the helm.  You would not even be able to adjust the sails, yet you worry as if you were the captain or the helmsman of the vessel.  Be quiet, dear soul—God is the Master!

Charles H. Spurgeon
