This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

Give me a stout heart to bear my own burdens.
Give me a willing heart to bear the burdens of others.
Give me a believing heart to cast all burdens upon Thee, O Lord.

John Baillie

This Day's Verse

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

1 Peter 5:8
The English Standard Version

This Day's Reprise

Some days, it is enough encouragement just to watch the clouds break up and disappear, leaving behind a blue patch of sky and bright sunshine that is so warm upon my face. It’s a glimpse of divinity; a kiss from heaven.

This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

I asked God for strength, that I might achieve
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey…
I asked for health, that I might do greater things
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things…
I asked for riches, that I might be happy
I was given poverty, that I might be wise…
I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God…
I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life
I was given life that I might enjoy all things…
I got nothing that I asked for—but everything I had hoped for
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am, among all men, most richly blessed.

This Day's Verse

He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

Psalm 91:4
The New International Version

This Day's Smile

To hold the same views at forty as we held at twenty is to have been stupefied for a score of years, and take rank, not as a prophet, but as an unteachable brat, well birched and none the wiser.

Robert Louis Stevenson

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

Joy is not the same as pleasure or happiness. A wicked and evil man may have pleasure, while any ordinary mortal is capable of being happy. Pleasure generally comes from things, and always through the senses; happiness comes from humans through fellowship. Joy comes from loving God and neighbor. Pleasure is quick and violent, like a flash of lightning. Joy is steady and abiding, like a fixed star. Pleasure depends on external circumstances, such as money, food, travel, etc. Joy is independent of them, for it comes from a good conscience and love of God.

Fulton J. Sheen

This Day's Verse

But they delight in doing everything God wants them to, and day and night are always meditating on his laws and thinking about ways to follow him more closely.

Psalm 1:2
The Living Bible

This Day's Smile

God’s never missed the runway through all the centuries of fearful fog.

This Day's Thought

Think it not hard if you get not your will, nor your delights in this life; God will have you to rejoice in nothing but himself.

Samuel Rutherford

This Day's Verse

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

1 Thessalonians 5:18
The King James Version

This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

Fear. His modus operandi is to manipulate you with the mysterious, to taunt you with the unknown. Fear of death, fear of failure, fear of God, fear of tomorrow—his arsenal is vast. His goal? To create cowardly, joyless souls. He doesn’t want you to make the journey to the mountain. He figures if he can rattle you enough, you will take your eyes off the peaks and settle for a dull existence in the flatlands.

Max Lucado

This Day's Verse

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant

1 Corinthians 13:4
The English Standard Version

This Day's Smile

Be thankful that God’s answers are wiser than your answers.

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

The Christian has a deep, silent, hidden peace, which the world sees not, like some well in a retired and shady place. What he is when left to himself and to his God, that is his true life.

John Henry Newman

This Day's Verse

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28
The King James Version

This Day's Reprise

Authentic religion is not a theology test.  It’s a love test.

This Day's Thought

Prayer is the peace of our spirit, the stillness of our thoughts, the evenness of recollection, the seat of meditation, the rest of our cares and the calm of our tempest: prayer is the issue of a quiet mind, of untroubled thoughts; it is the daughter of charity and the sister of meekness.

Jeremy Taylor

This Day's Verse

The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and for evermore.

Psalm 121:7-8
The Revised Standard Version

The church changes the world not by making converts but by making disciples.

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

An old theologian once said, “Who chides a servant for taking away the first course of a feast when the second consists of far greater delicacies?” Who then can regret that this present world passes away when he sees that an eternal world of joy is coming? The first course is grace, but the second is glory, and that is as much better as the fruit is better than the blossom.

Charles Spurgeon

This Day's Verse

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:19
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

My Bible didn’t come with a bottle of Wite-Out. I’ve looked for those Bible ‘kits’—I’ve seen others using them—but I still haven’t figured out where they’re getting them.

This Day's Thought

No passion or affection, with which we are born, can be in itself sinful; it becomes so, only by wilful or careless indulgence.

Jonathan Mayhew

This Day's Verse

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

2 Corinthians 5:17
The New King James Version

This Day's Reprise

I find my Lord going and coming seven times a day.  His visits are short; but they are frequent and sweet.

This Day's Thought

Christianity knows no truth which is not the child of love and the parent of duty.

Phillips Brooks

This Day's Verse

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

1 Peter 5:6-7
The New International Version

This Day's Smile

If you would attain to what you are not yet, you must always be displeased by what you are. For where you are pleased with yourself, there you have remained. Keep adding, keep walking…

Augustine
