This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

God’s altar stands from Sunday to Sunday, and the seventh day is no more for religion than any other—it is for rest. The whole seven are for religion, and one of them for rest, for instruction, for social worship, for gaining strength for the other six.

Henry Ward Beecher

This Day's Verse

Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord.

2 Peter 1:2
The King James Version

This Day's Smile

Someone once asked Dwight Moody, the nineteenth-century American evangelist, “Have you been filled with the Holy Spirit?” “Yes,” he replied, “but I leak!”

This Day's Thought

We can enter into the truth only by love.

Blaise Pascal

This Day's Verse

Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

Romans 13:11-14
The English Standard Version

This Day's Reprise

One Sunday I was entertained in a farm home of a member of a rural church. I was impressed by the intelligence and unusually good behavior of the only child in the home, a little four-year-old boy. Then I discovered one reason for the child’s charm. The mother was at the kitchen sink, washing the intricate parts of the cream separator when the little fellow came to her with a magazine. “Mother,” he asked, “what is this man in the picture doing?” To my surprise she dried her hands, sat down on a chair and taking the boy in her lap she spent ten minutes answering his questions. After the child had left I commented on her having interrupted her chores to answer the boy’s questions, saying, “Most mothers wouldn’t have bothered.” “I expect to be washing cream separators for the rest of my life,” she told me, “But never again will my son ask me that question!”

This Day's Thought

When David Livingstone was asked if he was afraid that going into Africa would be too difficult and too dangerous, he answered, “I am immortal until the will of God for me is accomplished.”

David Livingstone

This Day's Verse

But now, thus says the LORD, your creator, O Jacob, And He who formed you, O Israel, “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine!”

This Day's Thought

It helps to resign as the controller of your fate. All that energy we expend to keep things running right is not what keeps things running right.

Anne Lamott

This Day's Verse

Make the most of your chances to tell others the Good News. Be wise in all your contacts with them. Let your conversation be gracious as well as sensible, for then you will have the right answer for everyone.

Colossians 4:5-6
The Living Bible

This Day's Smile

Bishop Festo Kivengere told the story of how he was going off to preach after a row with his wife. The Holy Spirit said to him, “Go back and pray with your wife!” He argued, “I’m due to preach in twenty minutes. I’ll do it afterwards.” “OK,” said the Holy Spirit. “You go and preach; I’ll stay with your wife.”

Festo Kivengere

This Day's Thought

The church needs people who are doers of the Word and not just hearers.

Warren Wiersbe

Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.

This Day's Thought

Sin is like some distempers of the eyes that make things to appear of different colours from those which properly belong to them.

Jonathan Edwards

This Day's Verse

“No slave can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”

Luke 16:13
The New Revised Standard Version

This Day's Reprise

There’s not much practical Christianity in the man who lives on better terms with angels and seraphs than with his children, servants and neighbours.

This Day's Smile

A man fell off a cliff but managed to grab hold of a branch on his way down. He hung there and shouted up to the top,
“Is anybody up there?”
“Yes,” came the reply, “God is up here!”
“Can you help me, God?”
“Yes.”
“What do you want me to do?”
“Let go of the branch.”
There was a pause.
“Is there anybody else up there?”

This Day's Thought

We see different persons exercised with different kinds of crosses. But whilst the heavenly Physician, consulting the health of all His patients, practises a milder treatment towards some, and cures others with rougher remedies, yet He leaves no one completely exempted, because He knows we are all diseased, without the exception of a single individual.

John Calvin

This Day's Verse

Then David said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and of good courage, and do it. Fear not, be not dismayed; for the Lord God, even my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you, until all the work for the service of the house of the Lord is finished.

1 Chronicles 28:20
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Thought

Men’s wills cannot withstand the will of God.

Augustine

This Day's Verse

Blessed are the people who know the festal shout, who walk, O LORD, in the light of your face, who exult in your name all the day and in your righteousness are exalted. For you are the glory of their strength; by your favor our horn is exalted. For our shield belongs to the LORD, our king to the Holy One of Israel.

Psalm 89:15-18
The English Standard Version
