This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

Temptations, when we first meet them, are as the lion that roared upon Samson; but if we overcome them, the next time we see them we shall find a nest of honey within them.

John Bunyan

This Day's Verse

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 1:7
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile

This Day's Thought

God, who is liberal in all his other gifts, shows us, by the wise economy of his providence, how circumspect we ought to be in the management of our time, for he never gives us two moments together.

François de Fénelon

This Day's Verse

Many peoples shall come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.”

Isaiah 2:3
The New Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

There are four ways God answers prayer: No, not yet; No, I love you too much; Yes, I thought you’d never ask; Yes, and here’s more.

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

St. Benedict said, “Always, we begin again.” It’s the same in twelve-step work. Every day, you get up and you try again. That’s our relationship with God—you can go way off the rails spiritually and forget about God and not spend enough time with God, and neglect your prayer life, and God is in that chapel waiting for you to come back. Missing you. Loving you. Always wanting to be with you. That’s the kind of love that God has for us. I hadn’t heeded the call when I was younger, and God still loved me. I had lied about my faith, and God still loved me. I had failed to go to church, and God still loved me. And now I was ready to begin again.

Monica Clare

This Day's Verse

Hearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.

Job 37:14
The King James Version

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

God had given me this lesson that I could still be imperfect and be loved. That’s how God loves us. We humans are terrible at loving one another. We’re terrible at keeping peace. We’re terrible at running the world and using our free will but for some reason God loves us all anyway.

Monica Clare

This Day's Verse

“But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!”

Amos 5:24
The New International Version

This Day's Reprise

Let your old age be childlike, and your childhood like old age; that is, so that neither may your wisdom be with pride, nor your humility without wisdom.

Augustine

This Day's Thought

There is no portion of our time that is our time, and the rest God’s; there is no portion of money that is our money, and the rest God’s money. It is all His; He made it all, gives it all, and He has simply trusted it to us for His service. A servant has two purses, the master’s and his own, but we have only one.

Adolphe Monod

This Day's Verse

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or insincerity.

James 3:17
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

I’ve been able to recognize the space between someone who is offering the best he can and someone who is in need is Holy ground.

This Day's Thought

Unless we learn the meaning of mercy by exercising it towards others, we will never have any real knowledge of what it means to love Christ.

Thomas Merton

This Day's Verse

“With God are wisdom and strength; he has counsel and understanding.”

Job 12:13
The New Revised Standard Version

This Day's Thought

Do not shelter the mirror which reflects your soul’s lack of beauty; rather welcome the truth, and believe that next to the knowledge of God nothing is so precious as the knowledge of self.

Jean Nicolas Grou

This Day's Verse

“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be done for you.  By this is My Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.”

John 15:7-8
The New American Standard Bible

This Day's Thought

The call to repentance follows men from the cradle to the grave.

Charles Hodge

This Day's Verse

Listen to the words of the wise; apply your heart to my instruction. For it is good to keep these sayings in your heart and always ready on your lips. I am teaching you today—yes, you—so you will trust in the LORD.

Proverbs 22:17-19
The New Living Translation

This Day's Smile

A Presbyterian, a Methodist and a Baptist were discussing which church Jesus would join if he were to return to earth. “He would obviously join the Presbyterians,” said the Presbyterian, “because we have the form of government nearest to the New Testament pattern.” “No,” said the Methodist, “he would join us because of our emphasis on preaching and fellowship.” Eventually, they turned to the Baptist, who had been silent all this time. “And what do you think?” they asked. He replied, “I don’t see why he should want to transfer his membership!”

This Day's Thought

Truth is more powerful than eloquence. The victory is in the hands of children speaking truth, not in the hands of lying eloquence.

Martin Luther

This Day's Verse

God be merciful unto us, and bless us; and cause his face to shine upon us;

Psalm 67:1
The King James Version

This Day's Smile

The Church Times recalls a story about the late Dr. Newport White when he was Regius Professor of Divinity at Dublin. On one great occasion somebody noticed him sitting unrobed in a pew and whispered, “Shouldn’t you be in the procession?” To which the worthy Doctor replied, “Just a little ostentatious humility.”
