This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

Thou art the true peace of the heart, Thou art its only rest; out of Thee all things are full of trouble and difficulty. In this peace, that is, in Thee, the one sovereign eternal Good, I will sleep and take my rest. Amen.

Thomas à Kempis

This Day's Verse

For so the Lord has commanded us, saying, “‘I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’” And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.

Acts 13:47-48
The English Standard Version

This Day's Thought

When you are proclaiming peace with your lips, be careful to have it even more fully in your heart.

Francis of Assisi

This Day's Verse

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

Psalm 121:1-4
The King James Version

You have not done enough, you have never done enough, so long as it is still possible that you have something of value to contribute.

Dag Hammarskjöld

This Day's Verse

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

This Day's Thought

Thanksgiving Day is a jewel to set in the hearts of honest men; but be careful that you do not take the day and leave out the gratitude.

E. P. Powell

This Day's Verse

And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

Peace comes when there is no cloud between us and God. Peace is the consequence of forgiveness, God’s removal of that which obscures His face and so breaks union with Him. The happy sequence culminating in fellowship with God is penitence, pardon, and peace—the first we offer, the second we accept, and the third we inherit.

Charles H. Brent

This Day's Verse

Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.

Psalm 139:23-24
The New King James Version

This Day's Thought

There can be no surer way to success than by disclaiming all confidence in ourselves, and referring the events of things to God with an implicit affiance.

Francis Atterbury

This Day's Verse

Turn thou us unto thee, O LORD, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old.

Lamentations 5:21

This Day's Thought

The Christian has a deep, silent, hidden peace, which the world sees not, like some well in a retired and shady place. What he is when left to himself and to his God, that is his true life.

John Henry Newman

This Day's Verse

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28
The King James Version

This Day's Thought

“My peace I give unto you”; it is a peace all over from the crown of the head to the sole of the feet, an irrepressible confidence.

Oswald Chambers

This Day's Verse

How many are your works, O LORD! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

Psalm 104:24
The New International Version

This Day's Reprise

The story is told of a poor man who plodded along toward home in an Irish town carrying a huge bag of potatoes. A horse and wagon carrying a stranger came along, and the stranger stopped the wagon and invited the man on foot to climb inside. This the poor man did, but when he sat down in the wagon he held the bag of potatoes in his arms. And when it was suggested that he should set it down, he said very warmly: “Sir, I don’t like to trouble you too much. You’re giving me a ride. I’ll carry the potatoes!” Sometimes we think we are doing the Lord a favor when we carry the burden. But the work is His, and the burden is His, and He asks us only to be faithful.

Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.

This Day's Reprise

Fulfillment doesn’t automatically happen as a result of linking up with the “right” person, job, or even ministry.  Fulfillment happens as a result of being in God’s will.
