This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

In an experience which often transcended all their powers of expression, the mystics realized God as an abiding Fact, a living Presence and Love, and by this their whole existence was transformed. And this happened to them, not because He loved and attended to them more than He does to us, but because they loved and attended to Him more than we do.

Evelyn Underhill

This Day's Verse

Thy word is a lamp to my feet, And a light to my path.

Psalm 119:105
The New American Standard Bible

He preaches well who lives well. That’s all the divinity I know.

This Day's Thought

I am certain that the Bible is the Word of God. Either it is or it isn’t, and either all of it is the Word of God, or we never can be sure of any of it. It is either absolute or obsolete. If we have to start changing this verse, toning down that, apologizing for this and making allowances for that, we might as well give up, so we must take it as it is or leave it alone.

Vance Havner

This Day's Verse

And the Lord’s servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.

2 Timothy 2:24
The New International Version

You have made us for yourself and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.

This Day's Thought

Before God changes our circumstances, He wants to change our hearts.

Warren Wiersbe

This Day's Verse

Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? The farmer sows the word. Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.”

Mark 4:13-20
The New International Version

This Day's Reprise

A violin-maker in the old days always chose the wood for his violins from the north side of the trees; it was the side upon which the wind and the storms had beaten. So he said when he heard the groaning of the trees in the forest at night he didn’t feel sorry for them, for they were just learning to be violins.

This Day's Thought

There are three kinds of faith in Christ:
1. Struggling faith, like a man in deep water desperately swimming.
2. Clinging faith, like a man hanging to the side of a boat.
3. Resting faith, like a man safely within the boat (and able to reach out with a hand to help someone else get in).

Dwight Lyman Moody

This Day's Verse

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile

A more glorious victory cannot be gained over another man than this, that when the injury began on his part, the kindness should begin on ours.

This Day's Thought

When someone tells me that he has never had a moment of probing religious doubt I find myself wondering whether he had ever known a moment of vital religious conviction.

Harold A. Bosley

This Day's Verse

He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.

Proverbs 15:32
The King James Version

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

It was a new way of seeing for me.  Always before, I’d looked for God in happy endings.  If the ending wasn’t happy, then God must not be in it.  At last, I came to understand a deeper truth.  Happy endings come and go.  That doesn’t mean God is absent.  It just means you need to learn to see him wherever you are.  If you keep your eyes on him, you will find that everything else changes too.  The larger purpose in all of that is God.  Now I put my faith in him—not in happy endings.  With God, every ending is just a fresh start that draws me ever closer to him.

George Koonce

This Day's Verse

For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction.

1 Thessalonians 1:4-5
The English Standard Version

This Day's Thought

When Christ is not known it is impossible to have any understanding in Scripture.

Martin Luther

This Day's Verse

For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Romans 6:5-11
The English Standard Version

This Day's Smile

God cannot endure that unfestive, mirthless attitude of ours in which we eat our bread in sorrow, with pretentious, busy haste, or even with shame. Through our daily meals He is calling us to rejoice, to keep holiday in the midst of our working day.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

This Day's Thought

Every Christian occupies some kind of pulpit and preaches some kind of sermon every day.

The Methodist Story

This Day's Verse

Every word of God is pure; He is a shield to those who put their trust in Him.  Do not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar.

Proverbs 30:5-6
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile

Theological preaching is deservedly unpopular if all it does is settle a lot of problems people never heard of, and asks a lot of questions nobody ever asks.

This Day's Thought

For forty years I have loved the Word of God.  I feel the blessed pages under my hand with special thankfulness as a rod and a staff to keep firm my steps through the valley of the shadow of depression and world calamity.  Truly the Bible—the teaching of our Savior—is the only way out of the dark.  If the wealth of things which we have in abundance has not knocked on our selfish hearts and opened them to the central message of Jesus, “Love ye one another,” perhaps these days of widespread suffering will be the pointed instrument that will “stab our spirit broad awake.”

Helen Keller

This Day's Verse

In the morning you will see the glory of the LORD,

This Day's Thought

If we abide by the principles taught in the Bible, our country will go on prospering and to prosper; but if we and our posterity neglect its instructions and authority, no man can tell how sudden a catastrophe may overwhelm us and bury all our glory in profound obscurity.

Daniel Webster

This Day's Verse

Oh, guard my soul, and deliver me!  Let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in you.

Psalm 25:20
