This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

Think how completely all the griefs of this mortal life will be compensated by one age, for instance, of the felicities beyond the grave, and then think that one age multiplied ten thousand times is not so much to eternity as one grain of sand is to the whole material universe. Think what a state it will be to be growing happier and happier still as ages pass away, and yet leave something still happier to come!

John Foster

This Day's Verse

Be not envious of evil men, nor desire to be with them; for their minds devise violence, and their lips talk of mischief.

Proverbs 24:1-2
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Reprise

Prayer is the slender nerve that moves the muscle of Omnipotence.

C. H. Spurgeon

This Day's Thought

There can be no surer way to success than by disclaiming all confidence in ourselves, and referring the events of things to God with an implicit affiance.

Francis Atterbury

This Day's Verse

Turn thou us unto thee, O LORD, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old.

Lamentations 5:21
The King James Version

This Day's Thought

His eye is upon every hour of my existence. His spirit is intimately present with every thought of my heart. His inspiration gives birth to every purpose within me. His hand impresses a direction on every footstep of my goings. Every breath I inhale is drawn by an energy which God deals out to me.

Thomas Chalmers

This Day's Verse

I love the Lord because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!

Psalm 116:1-2
The New Living Translation

This Day's Smile

Honest good-humour is the oil and wine of a merry meeting, and there is no jovial companionship equal to that where the jokes are rather small and the laughter abundant.

Washington Irving

This Day's Thought

They were services like no others, these times in Barracks 28, within our concentration camp. A single meeting night might include a recital of the Magnificat in Latin by a group of Roman Catholics, a whispered hymn by some Lutherans, and a sotto-voce chant by Eastern Orthodox women. With each moment the crowd around us would swell, packing the nearby platforms, hanging over the edges, until the high structures groaned and swayed. At last either Betsie or I would open the Bible. Because only the Hollanders could understand the Dutch text we would translate aloud in German. And then we would hear the life-giving words passed back along the aisles in French, Polish, Russian, Czech, back into Dutch. They were little previews of heaven, these evenings beneath the light bulb.

Corrie ten Boom

This Day's Verse

Receive my instruction, and not silver, And knowledge rather than choice gold; For wisdom is better than rubies, And all the things one may desire cannot be compared with her.

Proverbs 8:10-11
The New King James Version

This Day's Reprise

God often visits us, but most of the time we are not at home.

This Day's Thought

An offense against your neighbor is a fence between you and God.

This Day's Verse

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:1
The New Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

The difference between rising at five and seven d’clock in the morning, for the space of forty years, supposing a man to go to bed at the same hour at night, is nearly equivalent to the addition of ten years to a man’s life.

The secret of perpetual revival is the constant offering of thanksgiving in every circumstance.

This Day's Thought

The only sure way to take fear out of living is to keep a respectful fear of God in our lives, which means to maintain a reverent attitude toward his place and influence. This brand of fear is a healthy ingredient, a deterrent to want, a spur to courage and confidence, an insurance against loss, and source of comfort and understanding.

Eugene Asa Carr

This Day's Verse

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Ephesians 2:10
The English Standard Version

This Day's Smile

Returning good for good is human; returning good for evil is divine.

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

Oh, how precious is time, and how it pains me to see it slide away, while I do so little to any good purpose. Oh, that God would make me more fruitful and spiritual.

David Brainerd

This Day's Verse

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.

Psalm 139:14
The English Standard Version

This Day's Smile

The captain of the ship looked into the dark night and saw faint lights in the distance. Immediately he told his signalman to send a message: “Alter your course 10 degrees south.” Promptly a return message was received: “Alter your course 10 degrees north.”

The captain was angered; his command had been ignored. So he sent a second message: “Alter your course 10 degrees south—I am the captain!” Soon another message was received: “Alter your course 10 degrees north —I am seaman third class Jones.

Immediately the captain sent a third message, knowing the fear it would evoke: “Alter your course 10 degrees south—I am a battleship!” Then the reply came: “Alter your course 10 degrees north—I am a lighthouse.”

This Day's Thought

BEGIN THE DAY WITH GOD. Kneel down to Him in prayer; lift up your heart to Him. And seek His love to share.

OPEN THE BOOK OF GOD. Read a portion there, that it may clarify all your thoughts and sweeten all your care.

GO THROUGH THE DAY WITH GOD. Even though you may not see Him, wherever you are He is near.

CONVERSE IN YOUR MIND WITH GOD. Raise your spirit heavenward; acknowledge every good He provides, and offer grateful praise.

CONCLUDE YOUR DAY WITH GOD. Confess your sins to Him; trust in the Lord’s atoning blood, and plead His righteousness.

Richard DeHaan

This Day's Verse

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, that you may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

1 Peter 2:9
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Reprise

There is nothing that can be done with anger that cannot be done better without it.

This Day's Thought

Let no thought linger in your mind that you would be ashamed to let out of your mouth.

This Day's Verse

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Matthew 28:19-20
The King James Version

This Day's Smile

But upon a day the good providence of God did cast me to Bedford to work on my calling, and in one of the streets of that town I came where there were three or four poor women sitting at a door in the sun and talking about the things of God; and being now willing to hear them discourse, I drew near to hear what they said, for I was now a brisk talker also myself in the matters of religion. But now I may say I heard, but I understood not; for they were far above, out of my reach; for their talk was about a new birth—the work of God on their hearts. And methought they spake as if Joy did make them speak; they spake with such pleasantness of scripture language and with such appearance of grace in all they said, that they were to me as if they had found a new world.

John Bunyan
