Forgiveness is the gateway by which the cross becomes inward.  When we accept forgiveness from anybody, we open our hearts to that person’s love.  The initial contact of the cross of Christ with those whom it reaches is by way of offering the forgiveness of God to those who admit their personal responsibility for the event.
