This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

Prayer is, after all, a very dangerous business.  For all the benefits it offers of growing closer to God, it carries with it one great element of risk: the possibility of change.  In prayer we open ourselves to the change that God will do something with us that we had not intended.

This Day's Verse

And Peter said to them, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 2:38
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Reprise

Thou hast made us for Thyself, and the heart of man is restless until it finds its rest in Thee.

Augustine

This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

By blood, I am Albanian.  By citizenship, an Indian.  By faith, I am a Catholic nun.  As to my calling, I belong to the world.  As to my heart, I belong entirely to the heart of Jesus.

Mother Teresa

This Day's Verse

Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;

1 Peter 1:22-23
The English Standard Version

This Day's Smile

Lord, the newness of this day
Calls me to an untried way:
Let me gladly take the road,
Give me strength to bear my load,
Thou my guide and helper be—
I will travel through with Thee.

Henry van Dyke

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

The faith that saves is the total response of the whole self to the will of God.  It is the response of the mind in belief, the heart in trust, the will in conduct.  It is to accept the fact that God goes all out for us, and then to be willing to go all out for God.

John A. Redhead

This Day's Verse

Let my mouth be filled with Your praise And with Your glory all the day.

Psalm 71:8
The New King James Version

This Day's Reprise

Kindness has converted more sinners than zeal, eloquence or learning.

Frederick Faber

This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

Christianity is either relevant all the time or useless anytime.  It is not just a phase of life; it is life itself.

Richard Halverson

This Day's Verse

About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.  Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken.  At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone’s chains came loose.

Acts 16:25-26
The New International Version

This Day's Smile

That infamous story is told of a mother that was attempting to get her son up on a Sunday morning to go to church.  Unable to make him get out of bed, she asked him why he did not want to go to church.  “I’ll tell you why,” he said, “the choir sings off key, the congregation doesn’t know the hymns, and the people are unfriendly.  Now you tell me two reasons why I should get up and go.”  “I will,” said the mother.  “In the first place you are thirty-five years of age and in the second place you’re the minister.”

I see no business in life but the work of Christ.

Henry Martyn

This Day's Verse

O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.

Psalm 47:1
The King James Version

This Day's Smile

There are two types of people in the world: those who gather and those who give.  And every man must decide which he will be.

This Day's Thought

We should submit our reason to the truths of faith with the humility and simplicity of a child.

Alphonsus Liguori

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.  Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

The Bible is not an end in itself, but a means to bring men to an intimate and satisfying knowledge of God, that they may enter into Him, that they may delight in His Presence, may taste and know the inner sweetness of the very God Himself in the core and center of their hearts.

A. W. Tozer

This Day's Verse

“He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.  He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward.  And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.  And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”

Matthew 10:40-42
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile

When God gives you a gift, don’t keep it in the package.

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

Do we know our neighbor, the poor of our own area?  It is so easy for us to talk and talk about the poor of other places.  Very often we have the suffering, we have the lonely, we have the people—old, unwanted, feeling miserable—and they are near us and we don’t even know them.  We have no time even to smile at them.  Tuberculosis and cancer are not the great diseases.  I think a much greater disease is to be unwanted, unloved.  The pain that these people suffer is very difficult to understand, to penetrate.  I think this is what our people all over the world are going through, in every family, in every home.  This suffering is being repeated in every man, woman and child.  I think Christ is undergoing his Passion again.  And it is for you and for me to help them.

Mother Teresa

This Day's Verse

Anyone who says he is a Christian but doesn’t control his sharp tongue is just fooling himself, and his religion isn’t worth much.

James 1:26
The Living Bible

This Day's Reprise

God always answers in the deeps, never in the shallows of our soul.

This Day's Thought

We are as safe at sea, safer in the storm which God sends us, than in a calm when we are befriended by the world.

Jeremy Taylor

This Day's Verse

With my mouth I will give great thanks to the Lord; I will praise him in the midst of the throng.

Psalm 109:30
The English Standard Version

This Day's Smile

The wayside pool reflects the fleeting clouds as exactly as does the mighty ocean.

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

No doctrine of the Christian religion is worth preserving which cannot be verified in daily life.

John T. Watson

This Day's Verse

Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.  Abstain from all appearance of evil.

1 Thessalonians 5:21-22
The King James Version

This Day's Smile

A mother was telling her six-year-old son about the Golden Rule.  “Always remember,” she said, “that we are here to help others.”  The youngster mulled this over for a minute and then asked, “Well, what are the others here for?”
