This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

Above all the grace and the gifts that Christ gives to his beloved is that of overcoming self.

Francis of Assisi

This Day's Verse

This is what the Lord says: “Restrain your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, for your work will be rewarded,” declares the Lord.  “They will return from the land of the enemy.  So there is hope for your descendants,” declares the Lord.  “Your children will return to their own land.”

Jeremiah 31:16-17
The New International Version

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

Pray remember what I have recommended to you, which is, to think often on God, by day, by night, in your business, and even in your diversions.  He is always near you and with you; leave Him not alone.  You would think it rude to leave a friend alone who came to visit you; why, then, must God be neglected?  Do not then forget Him, but think on Him often, adore Him continually, live and die with Him; this is the glorious employment of a Christian; in a word, this is our profession; if we do not know it we must learn it.  I will endeavour to help you with my prayers…

Brother Lawrence

This Day's Verse

My son, do not lose sight of these—keep sound wisdom and discretion, and they will be life for your soul and adornment for your neck.  Then you will walk on your way securely, and your foot will not stumble.  If you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.  Do not be afraid of sudden terror or of the ruin of the wicked, when it comes, for the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.

Proverbs 3:21-26
The English Standard Version

This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

And God who gives beginnings gives the end;
A place for broken things too broken to mend.

John Masefield

This Day's Verse

You were chosen by God the Father long ago.  He knew you were to become His children.  You were set apart for holy living by the Holy Spirit.  May you obey Jesus Christ and be made clean by His blood. May you be full of His loving-favor and peace.

1 Peter 1:2
The New Life Version

This Day's Smile

Dear God: I bet it is very hard for you to love all of everybody in the whole world.  There are only four people in our family, and I can never do it.

This Day's Thought

What you bring away from the Bible depends to some extent on what you carry to it.

Oliver Wendell Holmes

This Day's Verse

This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.

1 John 1:5
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile

Pray only in a room with windows [to remember the world outside].

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

It has seemed to me fit and proper that the gifts of God should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged with one heart and one voice by the whole American people.  I do, therefore, invite my fellow citizens to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens.

Abraham Lincoln, Thanksgiving proclamation of 1863

This Day's Verse

As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him.  Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

Colossians 2:6-7
The King James Version

This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

Thanksgiving was never meant to be shut up in a single day.

Robert Caspar Lintner

This Day's Verse

With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the Lord: “He is good; his love toward Israel endures forever.”  And all the people gave a great shout of praise to the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid.

Ezra 3:11
The New International Version

This Day's Smile

Thanksgiving, to be truly thanksgiving, is first thanks, then giving.

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

Although one can derive inspiration from any portion of the Scripture, it is better to have an understanding of the general structure of the Bible to get the most out of it.  The Old Testament is an account of a nation, Israel.  Out of that nation came Jesus Christ, the Saviour of our world.  The New Testament is an account of a Man, the Son of Man, the Saviour.  God Himself became a man, so that we might know what He is like.  His appearance on the earth was the central, most important event of history.  The Old Testament gives the background for this event; the New Testament tells the story of its fulfillment.  You will find a unity of thought and purpose which indicates that one mind inspired the writing of the whole.

Billy Graham

This Day's Verse

Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.  Before the mountains were brought forth,  Or ever You had formed the earth and the world,  Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

Psalm 90:1-2
The New King James Version

And thank you!

This Day's Thought

We talk about God’s remembering us, as if it were a special effort.  But if we could only know how truly we belong to God, it would be different.  God’s remembrance of us is the natural claiming of our life by Him as true part of His own.

Phillips Brooks

This Day's Verse

Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.

Isaiah 58:8
The New International Version

This Day's Smile

Walk cheerfully over the world, answering that of God in everyone.

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

Take away anything I have, but do not take away the sweetness of walking and talking with the King of Glory!  It is good to let our thoughts run away with us sometimes, concerning the greatness of our God and His marvelous kindness to us.  As we look back, what wonderful leadings and providences we see; what encouragement we find for the future.

John Stam

This Day's Verse

“The Lord is with you while you are with Him.  If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you.”

2 Chronicles 15:2
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile

Where there is faith, there is love;
Where there is love, there is peace;
Where there is peace, there is God;
Where there is God, there is no need.

Leo Tolstoy
