This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

The word joy is too great and grand to be confused with the superficial things we call happiness.

Kirby Page

This Day's Verse

“Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

Matthew 24:44
The English Standard Version

This Day's Smile

No one can have a gossiping tongue unless he has gossiping ears.

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

The nearer I approach the end, the plainer I hear around me the immortal symphonies of the world to come.  For half a century I have been writing my thoughts in prose and verse; but I feel that I have not said one-thousandth part of what is in me.  When I have gone down to the grave I shall have ended my day’s work; but another day will begin the next morning.  Life closes in the twilight but opens with the dawn.

Victor Hugo

This Day's Verse

What shall we say about such wonderful things as these?  If God is for us, who can ever be against us?  Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else?

Romans 8:31-32
The New Living Translation

This Day's Thought

OH, thank You, Jesus, for being born for us, and living for us, and dying for us, and rising for us, and seeing us the Holy Spirit.  Thank You, with thanks beyond words, but must be expressed in the lovingness of our lives.

Madeleine L’Engle

This Day's Verse

“Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say: ’Return, backsliding Israel,’ says the Lord; ‘I will not cause My anger to fall on you.  For I am merciful,’ says the Lord; ‘I will not remain angry forever.  Only acknowledge your iniquity, That you have transgressed against the Lord your God, And have scattered your charms To alien deities under every green tree, And you have not obeyed My voice,’ says the Lord.”

Jeremiah 3:12-13
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile

Dawn is a gift given to us that we might see in it the face of God.  It is a time to acknowledge His presence and power in the glory of His creation.  It is a time to revel in the pageantry and color of creation.  At dawn God opens His hand; glory shines forth, and eternal light dispels night.

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

Prayer is the most important thing in my life.  If I should neglect prayer for a single day, I should lose a great deal of the fire of faith.

Martin Luther

This Day's Verse

“‘You shall be My people, And I will be your God.’”

Jeremiah 30:22
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile

The tongue is our most powerful weapon of manipulation.  A frantic stream of words flows from us because we are in a constant process of adjusting our public image.  We fear so deeply what we think other people see in us, so we talk in order to straighten out their understanding.

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

We all know that a Christian must bear the cross.  In theory we are all prepared to accept one.  But you will no doubt have noticed that the cross that comes our way is never the right one.  The cross we bear (our health, our face, our circumstances, our family, our stupid job, our failure—or our stupid success) always seem to us to be intolerable, mean, humiliating, harmful…Desperately we call for another, a cross made to our own size, a cross which will be bearable, spiritual, elevating, beneficial to ourselves and to others.

Louis Evely

This Day's Verse

“O Lord, God of our fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Israel!  Make your people always want to obey you, and see to it that their love for you never changes.  Give my son Solomon a good heart toward God, so that he will want to obey you in the smallest detail and will look forward eagerly to finishing the building of your Temple, for which I have made all of these preparations.”  Then David said to all the people, “Give praise to the Lord your God!”  And they did, bowing low before the Lord and the king.

1 Chronicles 29:18-20
The Living Bible

This Day's Thought

Christ’s deeds and examples are commandments of what we should do.

John Wycliffe

This Day's Verse

A man’s pride will bring him low, But the humble in spirit will retain honor.

Proverbs 29:23
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile

A house testifies that there was a builder, a dress that there was a weaver, a door that there was a carpenter; so our world by its existence proclaims its Creator, God.

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

Death is not death if it kills no part of us, save that which hindered us from perfect life.
Death is not death if it raises us in a moment from darkness into light, from weakness into strength, from sinfulness into holiness.
Death is not death if it brings us nearer to Christ, who is the fount of life.
Death is not death if it perfects our faith by sight and lets us behold Him in whom we have believed.
Death is not death if it gives us to those whom we have loved and lost, for whom we have lived, for whom we long to live again.
Death is not death if it rids us of doubt and fear, of chance and change, of space and time, and all which space and time bring forth and then destroy.
Death is not death, for Christ has conquered Death for Himself and for those who trust in Him.

Charles Kingsley

This Day's Verse

Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation.  He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.

Psalm 62:1-2
The King James Version

This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

The men who followed Him were unique in their generation.  They turned the world upside down because their hearts had been turned right side up.  The world has never been the same.

Billy Graham

This Day's Verse

“And you are my sheep, the sheep of my pasture, and I am your God, says the Lord God.”

Ezekiel 34:31
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

He who does not pray when the sun shines will not know how to pray when the clouds roll in.

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

When Christ brings his cross, he brings his presence; and where he is, none is desolate, and there is no room for despair.  As he knows his own, so he knows how to comfort them, using sometimes the very grief itself, and straining it to a sweetness of peace unattainable by those ignorant of sorrow.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning

This Day's Verse

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.  For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”

Romans 1:16-17
The New International Version

This Day's Smile

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

Dear Ann Landers, I am a girl 18 years old and living at home with my father.  One hears so much about the generation gap these days, but it doesn’t exist in our family.  Every day my father tells me, “I trust you.  I respect you.  I believe in you.  I love you.”  He doesn’t actually speak the words, but the message comes across loud and clear.  It’s the look in his eyes.  The way he just assumes I am doing the right thing.  It all adds up to confidence and faith.  I’d rather die than let him down.

This Day's Verse

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, who abides in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.”
