This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

We can learn that it is impossible to understand and appreciate who your spouse is without understanding his or her God-given uniqueness.

H. Norman Wright

This Day's Verse

Folly is joy to him who is destitute of discernment, But a man of understanding walks uprightly.

Proverbs 15:21
The New King James Version

This Day's Reprise

I have always been complaining that my work was constantly interrupted, until I slowly discovered that my interruptions were my work.

Henri Nouwen

This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

To say prayers in a decent, delicate way is not heavy work.  But to pray really, to pray till hell feels the ponderous stroke, to pray till the iron gates of difficulty are opened, till the mountains of obstacles are removed, till the mists are exhaled and the clouds are lifted, and the sunshine of a cloudless day brightens—this is hard work, but it is God’s work, and man’s best labor.

E. M. Bounds

This Day's Verse

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.”

Hebrews 12:28-29
The New International Version

This Day's Smile

Singing together unites those who disagree, makes friends of those at odds, brings together those who are out of charity with one another.  Who could retain a grievance against the man with whom he had joined in singing before God?

Ambrose

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

Prayer is as natural an expression of faith as breathing is of life.

Jonathan Edwards

This Day's Verse

The Lord detests those whose hearts are perverse, but he delights in those whose ways are blameless.

Proverbs 11:20
The New International Version

This Day's Smile

Dear God, I feel that Jesus is a friend of mine.  Since he’s your friend too, that makes us friends.  Right or not?  Let’s get together to play sometime.  You can bring all the toys you have and I’ll bring mine.  We’ll see who has more.

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

The most privileged and moving experience a preacher can have is when, in the middle of a sermon, a strange hush descends upon the congregation.  The sleepers have woken up, the coughers have stopped coughing, and the fidgeters are sitting still.  No eyes or minds are wandering.  Everybody is attending, though not to the preacher.  For the preacher is forgotten, and the people are face to face with the living God, listening to his still, small voice.

John Stott

This Day's Verse

Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.  He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.”

John 14:23-24
The New King James Version

This Day's Reprise

Nobody ever outgrows Scripture; the Book widens and deepens with our years.

C. H. Spurgeon

This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

So that if in this life we would enjoy the peace of paradise, we must accustom ourselves to a familiar, humble, affectionate conversation with Him.

Brother Lawrence

This Day's Verse

Then David said to Gad, “I am in great distress; let us fall into the hand of the Lord, for his mercy is great; but let me not fall into the hand of man.”

2 Samuel 24:14
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

A thankful heart doubles our blessings, causing us to enjoy them twice—when we receive them, and when we remember them.

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

Someday you will read in the papers that D. L. Moody of East Northfield is dead.  Don’t you believe a word of it.  At that moment I shall be more alive than now.  I shall have gone up higher, that is all—out of this old clay tenement into a house that is immortal; a body that death cannot touch, that sin cannot taint, a body fashioned like unto his glorious body.  That which is born of the flesh may die.  That which is born of the spirit will live forever.

D. L. Moody

This Day's Verse

Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

Psalm 97:11
The King James Version

This Day's Reprise

We turn to God for help when our foundations are shaking only to learn that it is God shaking them.

Charles West

This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

To wait on God is to live a life of desire toward Him, delight in Him, dependence on Him, and devotedness to Him.

Matthew Henry

This Day's Verse

“I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint.”

Jeremiah 31:25
The New International Version

This Day's Smile

Laughter is a way of communicating joy, and joy is a net of love by which we can catch souls.

Mother Teresa

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

Giving thanks means little unless you are living thanks.

Unknown

This Day's Verse

“‘Behold, the Lord your God has set the land before you; go up, take possession, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has told you; do not fear or be dismayed.’”

Deuteronomy 1:21
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

A grandfather was walking through his yard when he heard his granddaughter repeating the alphabet in a tone of voice that sounded like a prayer.  He asked her what she was doing.  The little girl explained: “I’m praying, but I can’t think of exactly the right words, so I’m just saying all the letters, and God will put them together for me, because He knows what I’m thinking.”

Charles B. Vaughan

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

Every great movement of God can be traced to a kneeling figure.

D. L. Moody

This Day's Verse

Now God gives us many kinds of special abilities, but it is the same Holy Spirit who is the source of them all.  There are different kinds of service to God, but it is the same Lord we are serving.  There are many ways in which God works in our lives, but it is the same God who does the work in and through all of us who are his.  The Holy Spirit displays God’s power through each of us as a means of helping the entire church.

1 Corinthians 12:4-7
The Living Bible

This Day's Reprise

Our little time of suffering is not worthy of our first night’s welcome home to Heaven.

This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

What is heaven, but to be with God, to dwell with him, to realize that God is mine, and I am his?

Charles Spurgeon

This Day's Verse

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.  For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.

Proverbs 3:13-14
The King James Version

This Day's Smile

Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are.  Let me learn from you, love you, bless you before you depart.  Let me not pass you by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow.

Mary Jean Irion
