This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

Every time we say, “I believe in the Holy Spirit,” we mean that we believe that there is a living God able and willing to enter human personality and change it.

J. B. Phillips

This Day's Verse

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him,  And He shall direct your paths.

Proverbs 3:5-6
The New King James Version

This Day's Reprise

A world without a Sabbath would be like a man without a smile, like a summer without flowers, and like a homestead without a garden.  It is the most joyous day of the whole week.

Henry Ward Beecher

This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

The Gateway to Christianity is not through an intricate labyrinth of dogma, but by a simple belief in the person of Christ.

William Lyon Phelps

This Day's Verse

Anyone is my brother who fears and trusts the Lord and obeys him.

Psalm 119:63
The Living Bible

This Day's Smile

I asked a man what made his life so radiant and bright.
He answered:  “Looking, looking toward the Light!”

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

The walls of our monasteries enclose a narrow space.  To erect the structure of holiness in it, one must dig deep and build high, must descend into the depths of the dark night of one’s own nothingness in order to be raised up high into the sunlight of divine love and compassion.

Edith Stein

This Day's Verse

Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Hebrews 2:18
The New International Version

This Day's Reprise

I was always complaining about the ruts in the road until I realized the ruts are the road.

This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

For me, prayer means launching out of the heart towards God; it means lifting up one’s eyes, quite simply, to Heaven, a cry of grateful love from the crest of joy or the trough of despair, it’s a vast, supernatural force which opens out my heart, and binds me close to Jesus.

Therese of Lisieux

This Day's Verse

Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.  If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

Isaiah 1:18-20
The King James Version

This Day's Smile

I rejoice in my life because the lamp still glows;
I seek no thorny ways;
I love the small pleasures of life.
If the doors are too low, I bend;
If I can remove a stone from the path, I do so;
If it is too heavy, I go round it.
I find something in every day that pleases me.
The cornerstone, my belief in God, makes my heart glad and my face shining.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s mother

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

Cast yourself into the arms of God and be very sure that if He wants anything of you, He will fit you for the work and give you strength.

Philip Neri

This Day's Verse

For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

Romans 10:10
The English Standard Version

This Day's Smile

Delicate humor is the crowning virtue of the saints.

Evelyn Underhill

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

Forgiveness is the gateway by which the cross becomes inward.  When we accept forgiveness from anybody, we open our hearts to that person’s love.  The initial contact of the cross of Christ with those whom it reaches is by way of offering the forgiveness of God to those who admit their personal responsibility for the event.

Charles Duell Kean

This Day's Verse

For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.  But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or insincerity.  And the harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

James 3:16-18
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Reprise

There are two ways of spreading light—to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.

Edith Wharton

This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

Human reason is weak, and may be deceived, but true faith cannot be deceived.

Thomas a Kempis

This Day's Verse

For God saved us and called us to live a holy life.  He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 1:9
The New Living Translation

This Day's Smile

There is a grace of kind listening, as well as a grace for kind speaking.

Frederick William Faber

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

During World War II there was a wonderful Russian nun, Mother Maria.  She lived in Paris under the Nazis and did her best to relieve the suffering, not only of the Catholics but of the Jews under persecution.  But one day, when the Nazis were lining up the Jewish girls in her convent school to take them off to the execution chambers, one high-school girl was so frightened that Mother Maria took off her nun’s habit, quickly put over her head the yellow scarf of the Jew and said gently: “I’ll go for you; I’ll take your place.”  And Mother Maria died as a Jew.  You see, there is such a thing in this world as suffering in behalf of others.  Christianity says that God suffers that way too.  This is the meaning of the Cross.  Christ went in our place.

Henry H. Kruener

This Day's Verse

Mark the blameless and behold the upright, for there is a future for the man of peace.

Psalm 37:37
The English Standard Version

This Day's Reprise

We’re simply managing our sins, which in turn encourages the church’s judgmental nature.

Jay Bakker

This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

God speaks to me not through the thunder and the earthquake, nor through the ocean and the stars, but through the Son of Man, and speaks in a language adapted to my imperfect sight and hearing.

William Lyon Phelps

This Day's Verse

Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.

Proverbs 8:14
The King James Version

This Day's Smile

Happiness is the art of finding joy and satisfaction in the little privileges of life:
a quiet hour in the sun instead of a far-away journey,
a little outing in the nearby woods instead of long trips away,
an hour with a friend instead of an extended visit with relatives,
a few pages of a book instead of hours of reading at a time,
a flash of sunset, a single beautiful flower, a passing smile, a kindly word, a little gift bestowed anonymously, a little thoughtfulness here and there as the days slip by.

This Day's Thought

This is the land of sin and death and tears…but up yonder is unceasing joy.

D. L. Moody

This Day's Verse

“For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.”

Hebrews 8:12
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

Prayer is the recovery of the soul’s breathing.
