This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

Our lives have become so antiseptic that we honesty believe we’ve suffered adversity and experienced affliction if our shoes pinch our toes, if our car is in the shop and we must take the bus, or if we find a bug in our water glass.  Meanwhile, much of the world’s population can’t afford shoes, travel only where they can get by foot, and often die for lack of food and water.

S. Rickly Christian

This Day's Verse

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4
The English Standard Version

This Day's Reprise

He who has learned to pray has learned the greatest secret of a holy and happy life.

William Law

This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

To be a Christian, or not to be, is not a matter of being a somewhat better man, or a man perhaps not quite so good.  It is a matter of life or death.

James Denney

This Day's Verse

Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.

Psalm 73:23
The New International Version

This Day's Smile

It is said that sheep may get lost simply by nibbling away at the grass and never looking up.  That can be true for any of us.  We can focus so much on what is immediately before us that we fail to see life in larger perspective.

This Day's Thought

Silly people think that money commands the bodily goods most worth having.

Thomas Aquinas

This Day's Verse

The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit.

Psalm 34:18
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile

To read the Bible as literature is like reading Moby Dick as a whaling manual or The Brothers Karamazov for its punctuation.

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

We must wait for God long, meekly, in the wind and wet, in the thunder and lightning, in the cold and the dark.  Wait, and he will come.  He never comes to those who do not wait.  He does not go their road.  When he comes, go with him, but go slowly, fall a little behind; when he quickens his pace, be sure of it before you quicken yours.  But when he slackens, slacken at once; and do not be slow only, but silent, very silent, for he is God.

Frederick W. Faber

This Day's Verse

But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.

Jeremiah 7:23
The King James Version

This Day's Reprise

This Day's Thought

Fear not that your life shall come to an end, but rather that it shall never have a beginning.

John Henry Newman

This Day's Verse

The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.

Romans 8:6
The New International Version

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

The holiest moment of the church service is the moment when God’s people—strengthened by preaching and sacrament—go out of the church door into the world to be the Church.  We don’t go to church; we are the Church.

Ernest Southcott

This Day's Verse

The Lord will guide you continually, And satisfy your soul in drought, And strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.

Isaiah 58:11
The New King James Version

This Day's Reprise

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.

Francis of Assisi

It is when we are out of options that we are most ready for God’s surprises.

The Lord is my light and my salvation; he protects me from danger—whom shall I fear?

This Day’s Thought-Friday

May you have a most joyful & meaningful Easter celebration!

This Day's Thought

Those who have given Christ a place in their hearts know He has risen from the dead, because He lives in them.

This Day's Verse

Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.  And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.  And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.  And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:  And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?  He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,  Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.  And they remembered his words,

Luke 24:1-8
The King James Version

This Day's Smile
