This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

Duties are ours, events are God’s;  When our faith goes to meddle with events, and to hold account upon God’s Providence, and beginneth to say, “How wilt Thou do this or that?” we lose ground; we have nothing to do there, it is our part to let the Almighty exercise His own office, and steer His own helm; there is nothing left for us, but to see how we may be approved of Him, and how we roll the weight of our weak souls upon Him who is God omnipotent, and when we thus essay miscarrieth, it shall be neither our sin nor our cross.

Samuel Rutherford

This Day's Verse

But the Lord was gracious to them and had compassion and showed concern for them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  To this day he has been unwilling to destroy them or banish them from his presence.

2 Kings 13:23
The New International Version

This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

There is no situation so chaotic that God cannot, from that situation, create something that is surpassingly good.  He did it at the creation.  He did it at the cross.  He is doing it today.

Handley Moule

This Day's Verse

For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your work; at the works of your hands I sing for joy.  How great are your works, O Lord!  Your thoughts are very deep!

Psalm 92:4-5
The English Standard Version

This Day's Smile

A religion that cares about the souls of men but not men’s bodies might be a religion, but it is not the Christian religion.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

This Day's Thought

Grace isn’t a little prayer you chant before receiving a meal.  It’s a way to live.

Jacqueline Winspear

This Day's Verse

The Lord is slow to get angry, but his power is great, and he never lets the guilty go unpunished.  He displays his power in the whirlwind and the storm.  The billowing clouds are the dust beneath his feet.

Nahum 1:3
The New Living Translation

This Day's Smile

Sometimes the shortest distance between two points is a winding path walked arm in arm.

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

“Dad, I’m not at all sure I can follow you any longer in your simple Christian faith,” stated the clergyman’s son when he returned from the university for the holidays with a fledgling scholar’s assured arrogance.  The father’s black eyes skewered his young son, who was “lost,” as C. S. Lewis put it, “in the invincible ignorance of his intellect.”  “Son,” the father said, “that is your freedom.  Your terrible freedom.

This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

When we pray, remember:
1. The love of God that wants the best for us.
2. The wisdom of God that knows what is best for us.
3. The power of God that can accomplish it.

William Barclay

This Day's Verse

And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever.  Amen.

This Day's Smile

I used to spend my nights dreaming about the life I wanted to live.  Now I live my dreams, and I spend my nights sleeping.

This Day's Thought

Grant, O merciful God, that with malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as You give us to see the right, we may strive to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds…to do all that which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Abraham Lincoln

This Day's Verse

Sanctify them in the truth; thy word is truth.

John 17:17

This Day's Thought

Make me remember, O God, that every day is Thy gift and ought to be used according to Thy command, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Samuel Johnson

This Day's Verse

I will meditate on the glorious splendor of Your majesty,  And on Your wondrous works.  Men shall speak of the might of Your awesome acts, And I will declare Your greatness.

Psalm 145:5-6
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile

You can safely assume that you’ve created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do.

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

Waiting for someone to repent before we forgive is to surrender our future to the person who wronged us.

Lewis Smedes

This Day's Verse

For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:

Colossians 1:16
The King James Version

This Day's Smile

So while the hours are passing,
All now is perfect rest;
I’m waiting for the morning,
The brightest and the best,
When He will call us to His side,
To be with Him, His spotless bride.
Oh, the love that sought me!
Oh, the blood that bought me!
Oh, the grace that brought me to the fold,
Wondrous grace that brought me to the fold!

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

A godly father prayed all his life for three wayward sons.  When he was dying, strangely he died in an agony of despair and doubt of his eternal salvation.  The day after the funeral the three sons were discussing their father.  “If a man so godly should die in such agony, what will it be like for us?” one asked.  As a result, all three turned to God.

F. W. Boreham

This Day's Verse

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.

This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

The question for each man to settle is not what he would do for the Lord if he had more money, time or education, but what he will do with the things he has.  It’s not who you are or what you have that matters—but whether Christ controls you.

Unknown

This Day's Verse

Then they cried to the Lord in their troubles, and he rescued them!  He led them from the darkness and shadow of death and snapped their chains.  Oh, that these men would praise the Lord for his loving-kindness and for all of his wonderful deeds!

Psalm 107:13-15
The Living Bible

This Day's Smile

Grace is like the secret of a lover we’ve not yet met, the echo of a time we’ve not yet experienced, news from a county we’ve not yet been to.

C. S. Lewis
