This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

He does not need to transplant us into a different field, but we should grow right where we are, with just the circumstances that surround us.  He makes His sun to shine and His dew to fall upon us, and transforms the very things that before were our greatest hindrances, into the chiefest and most blessed means of our growth.  No difficulties in your case can baffle Him.  No dwarfing of your growth in years that are past, no apparent dryness of your inward springs of life, no crookedness or deformity in any of your past development, can in the least mar the perfect work that He will accomplish.  Put yourselves absolutely into His hands, and let Him have His own way with you.

Hannah Whitall Smith

This Day's Verse

Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people,

Ephesians 6:7
The New International Version

This Day's Reprise

Prayer is the sum of our relationship with God. We are what we pray. The degree of our faith is the degree of our prayer. Our ability to love is our ability to pray.

This Day's Thought

Be patient with every one, but above all with yourself. I mean, do not be disturbed because of your imperfections, and always rise up bravely from a fall.  I am glad that you make a daily new beginning.  There is no better means of progress in the spiritual life than to be continually beginning afresh, and never to think that we have done enough.

Francis de Sales

This Day's Verse

Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.  Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever!  Amen.

Ephesians 3:20-21
The New Living Translation

This Day's Reprise

The morning is the gate of the day, and should be well guarded with prayer.  It is one end of the thread on which the day’s actions are strung, and should be well knotted with devotion.  If we felt more the majesty of life we should be more careful of its mornings.  He who rushes from his bed to his business and without worship is as foolish as though he had not put on his clothes, or washed his face, and as unwise as though he dashed into battle without arms or armor.

C. H. Spurgeon

This Day's Thought

In the early years of Christian experience he often meets our needs in striking ways in order to strengthen and confirm our new and weak faith.  But the more experience of his goodness and faithfulness we have, the more he is able to test and develop our faith by teaching us long-suffering and the assurance to wait patiently.

Hannah Hurnard

This Day's Verse

And now, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,

Deuteronomy 10:12
The King James Version

This Day's Reprise

I remember my mother’s prayers and they have always followed me.  They have clung to me all my life.

His mercies are new every morning.

Charles Swindoll

This Day's Verse

“‘Teach me what I cannot see; if I have done wrong, I will not do so again.’”

Job 34:32
The New International Version

This Day's Smile

Little Timmy was saying his prayers one night.  His mother heard this plea: “And please make Tommy stop throwing things at me.  By the way, I’ve mentioned this before.”

This Day's Thought

The will of God is never defeated, though much is done that is contrary to His will…Even what is done in opposition to His will does not defeat His will.

Augustine

This Day's Verse

If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a fellow believer, that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see?  And he has given us this command: Those who love God must also love their fellow believers.

1 John 4:20-21
The New Living Translation

And help us, this and every day,
To live more nearly as we pray.

This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

If faith is the gaze of the heart at God, and if this gaze is but the raising of the inward eyes to meet the all-seeing eyes of God, then it follows that it is one of the easiest things possible to do.  It would be like God to make the most vital thing easy and place it within the range of possibility for the weakest and poorest of us.

A. W. Tozer

This Day's Verse

Because Your lovingkindness is better than life, My lips shall praise You.

Psalm 63:3
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile

If thou wouldst preserve a sound body, use fasting and walking; if a healthful soul, fasting and prayer.  Walking exercises the body; praying exercises the soul; fasting cleanses both.

This Day's Thought

How shall we fear God unless we know that all our welfare lies in Him?

John Calvin

This Day's Verse

“Be strong, all you people of the land,’ declares the Lord, ‘and work. For I am with you,’ declares the Lord Almighty.”

Haggai 2:4
The New International Version

This Day's Reprise

Prayer shouldn’t be casual or sporadic, dictated only by the needs of the moment.  Prayer should be as much a part of our lives as breathing.

Billy Graham

This Day's Thought

To pray is to desire; but it is to desire what God would have us desire.  He who desires not from the bottom of his heart, offers a deceitful prayer.

François Fénelon

This Day's Verse

I have taught you the way of wisdom; I have led you in the paths of uprightness.

Proverbs 4:11
The English Standard Version

This Day's Smile

It is one of the severest tests of friendship to tell your friend his faults.  If you are angry with a man, or hate him, it is not hard to go to him and stab him with words; but so to love a man that you cannot bear to see the stain of sin upon him, and to speak painful truth through loving words, that is friendship.  But few have such friends.  Our enemies usually teach us what we are at the point of the sword.

This Day's Thought

That piety which sanctifies us, and which is a true devotion to God, consists in doing all His will precisely at the time, in the situation, and under the circumstances, in which He has placed us.  Perfect devotedness requires not only that we do the will of God, but that we do it with love.  God would have us serve Him with delight; it is our hearts that He asks of us.

François Fénelon

This Day's Verse

Even if we believe that it makes no difference to the Lord whether we do these things, still we cannot just go ahead and do them to please ourselves; for we must bear the “burden” of being considerate of the doubts and fears of others—of those who feel these things are wrong.  Let’s please the other fellow, not ourselves, and do what is for his good and thus build him up in the Lord.  Christ didn’t please himself.  As the Psalmist said, “He came for the very purpose of suffering under the insults of those who were against the Lord.”  These things that were written in the Scriptures so long ago are to teach us patience and to encourage us so that we will look forward expectantly to the time when God will conquer sin and death.

Romans 15:1-4
The Living Bible
