This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

The only sure way to take fear out of living is to keep a respectful fear of God in our lives, which means to maintain a reverent attitude toward his place and influence. This brand of fear is a healthy ingredient, a deterrent to want, a spur to courage and confidence, an insurance against loss, and source of comfort and understanding.

Eugene Asa Carr

This Day's Verse

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Ephesians 2:10
The English Standard Version

This Day's Smile

Returning good for good is human; returning good for evil is divine.

This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

Life is no straight and easy corridor along which we travel free and unhampered, but a maze of passages, through which we must seek our way, lost and confused, now and again checked in a blind alley. But always, if we have faith, a door will open for us, not perhaps one that we ourselves would ever have thought of, but one that will ultimately prove good for us.

A. J. Cronin

This Day's Verse

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:5
The New International Version

This Day's Smile

Kindness is simply love flowing out in little gentlenesses.

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

You cannot claim to worship Jesus in the tabernacle if you do not pity Jesus in the slum. Now go out into the highways and hedges, and look for Jesus in the ragged and the naked..in those who have lost hope, and in those who are struggling to make good. Look for Jesus in them; and when you have found him, gird yourself with his towel of fellowship and wash His feet in the person of his brethren.

Frank Weston

This Day's Verse

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

Psalm 1:6
The New International Version

This Day's Reprise

It would seem, after having been a Christian for almost 80 years, that I would no longer do ugly things that need forgiving.  Yet I am constantly doing things to others that cause me to have to go back and ask their forgiveness.  Sometimes these are things I actually do—other times they are simply attitudes I let creep in which break the circle of God’s perfect love.

This Day's Thought

Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve…You don’t have to know the second theory of thermo-dynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

This Day's Verse

Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.

Ephesians 6:10-11
The New American Standard Bible

This Day's Smile

To walk with God, we must make it a practice to talk with God.

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

Slow me down, Lord! Ease the pounding of my heart by the quieting of my mind. Steady my hurried pace with a vision of the eternal reach of time. Give me, amidst the confusion of my day, the calmness of the everlasting hills. Break the tensions of my nerves and muscles with the soothing music of singing streams that live in my memory. Teach me the art of taking minute vacations…of slowing down to look at a flower, to chat with a friend, to pat a dog, to read a few lines from a good book. Remind me each day of the fable of the hare and the tortoise, that I may know that the race is not always to the swift; that there is more to life than measuring its speed. Let me look upward into the branches of the towering oak and know that it grew great and strong because it grew slowly and well. Slow me down, Lord, and inspire me to send my roots deep into the soil of life’s enduring values that I may grow toward the stars of my greater destiny.

Wilferd Arlan Peterson

This Day's Verse

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

2 Chronicles 7:14
The King James Version

This Day's Reprise

Nobody is kind to only one person at once, but to many persons in one.

To service the poor purely for the love of God.

Lord, your discipline is good, for it leads to life and health. You restore my health and allow me to live!

This Day's Verse

Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.

Our prayers run along one road and God’s answers by another, and by and by they meet.

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

It is one thing to see the land of peace from a wooded ridge…and another to tread the road that leads to it.

Augustine

This Day's Verse

He said also to the one who had invited him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

Luke 14:12-14
The New Revised Standard Version

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

Sorrow is divine. Sorrow is reigning on all the thrones of the universe, and the crown of all crowns has been one of thorns. There have been many books that treat of the sympathy of sorrow, but only one that bids us glory in tribulation, and count it all joy when we fall into divers afflictions, that so we may be associated with that great fellowship of suffering of which the incarnate Son of God is the head, and through which He is carrying a redemptive conflict to a glorious victory over evil. If we suffer with Him, we shall also reign with Him.

Harriet Beecher Stowe

This Day's Verse

As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.

Proverbs 27:17
The New King James Version

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

I think Christians fail so often to get answers to their prayers because they do not wait long enough on God. They just drop down and say a few words, and then jump up and forget it and expect God to answer them. Such praying always reminds me of the small boy ringing his neighbor’s door-bell, and then running away as fast as he can go.

E. M. Bounds

This Day's Verse

The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and the Lord will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

Nahum 1:3
The English Standard Version

This Day's Reprise

In Jesus the service of God and the service of the least of the brethren were one.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer
