This Day's Thought

The gospel chargeth us with piety towards God, and justice and charity to men, and temperance and chastity in reference to ourselves.

John Tillotson

This Day's Verse

But you are a God ready to forgive, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love,

Nehemiah 9:17

This Day's Thought

As God is exalted to the right place in our lives, a thousand problems are solved all at once.

A. W. Tozer

This Day's Verse

“For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.”

Luke 19:10
The New Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

The problem with Western Christians is not that they aren’t where they should be but that they aren’t what they should be where they are.

This Day's Thought

What an immense workman is God in miniature as well as in the great! With the one hand, perhaps, He is making a ring of one hundred thousand miles in diameter, to revolve round a planet like Saturn, and with the other is forming a tooth in the ray of the feather of a hummingbird, or a point in the claw of the foot of a microscopic insect. When He works in miniature, everything is gilded, polished, and perfect; but whatever is made by human art, as a needle, etc., when viewed by a microscope appears rough, and coarse, and bungling.

William Law

This Day's Verse

For the LORD is our judge; the LORD is our lawgiver; the LORD is our king; he will save us.

Isaiah 33:22
The English Standard Version

This Day's Thought

God is better served in resisting a temptation to evil than in many formal prayers.

William Penn

This Day's Verse

“‘These are the things you shall do: Speak each man the truth to his neighbor; Give judgment in your gates for truth, justice, and peace; Let none of you think evil in your heart against your neighbor; And do not love a false oath. For all these are things that I hate,’ Says the Lord.”

Zechariah 8:16-17
The New King James Version

This Day's Thought

Assuredly there is but one way in which to achieve what is not merely difficult but utterly against human nature: to love those who hate us, to repay their evil deeds with benefits, to return blessings for reproaches. It is that we remember not to consider men’s evil intention but to look upon the image of God in them, which cancels and effaces their transgressions, and with its beauty and dignity allures us to love and embrace them.

John Calvin

This Day's Verse

No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel can avail against the LORD.

Proverbs 21:30
The English Standard Version

This Day's Thought

BEGIN THE DAY WITH GOD. Kneel down to Him in prayer; lift up your heart to Him. And seek His love to share.

OPEN THE BOOK OF GOD. Read a portion there, that it may clarify all your thoughts and sweeten all your care.

GO THROUGH THE DAY WITH GOD. Even though you may not see Him, wherever you are He is near.

CONVERSE IN YOUR MIND WITH GOD. Raise your spirit heavenward; acknowledge every good He provides, and offer grateful praise.

CONCLUDE YOUR DAY WITH GOD. Confess your sins to Him; trust in the Lord’s atoning blood, and plead His righteousness.

Richard DeHaan

This Day's Verse

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, that you may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

1 Peter 2:9
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Thought

It has been my every day’s portion to be let into the evil of my own heart.

John Bunyan

This Day's Verse

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

Psalm 91:1-2
The English Standard Version

This Day's Thought

I believe in a God who knows how complicated human life is, how difficult it is to be a good person at all times, and who expects not a perfect life but an honest effort at a good one.

Harold S. Kushner

This Day's Verse

But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

John 20:31
The King James Version

This Day's Thought

Patience is the guardian of faith, the preserver of peace, the cherisher of love, the teacher of humility; Patience governs the flesh, strengthens the spirit, sweetens the temper, stifles anger, extinguishes envy, subdues pride; she bridles the tongue, refrains the hand, tramples upon temptations, endures persecutions, consummates martyrdom: Patience produces unity in the church, loyalty in the State, harmony in families and societies; she comforts the poor and moderates the rich; she makes us humble in prosperity, cheerful in adversity, unmoved by calumny and reproach; she teaches us to forgive those who have injured us, and to be the first in asking forgiveness of those whom we have injured; she delights the faithful, and invites the unbelieving; she adorns the woman, and approves the man; Is loved in a child, praised in a young man, admired in an old man; she is beautiful in either sex and every age.

George Horne

This Day's Verse

Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise.

Proverbs 20:1
The New International Version

This Day's Reprise

If you believe in a God who controls the big things, you have to believe in a God who controls the little things.  It is we, of course, to whom things look “little” or “big.”

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

St. Benedict said, “Always, we begin again.” It’s the same in twelve-step work. Every day, you get up and you try again. That’s our relationship with God—you can go way off the rails spiritually and forget about God and not spend enough time with God, and neglect your prayer life, and God is in that chapel waiting for you to come back. Missing you. Loving you. Always wanting to be with you. That’s the kind of love that God has for us. I hadn’t heeded the call when I was younger, and God still loved me. I had lied about my faith, and God still loved me. I had failed to go to church, and God still loved me. And now I was ready to begin again.

Monica Clare

This Day's Verse

Hearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.

Job 37:14
The King James Version
