This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

The strength for our conquering and our victory is drawn continually from Christ.  The Bible does not teach that sin is completely eradicated from the Christian in this life, but it does teach that sin shall no longer reign over you.  The strength and power of sin have been broken.  The Christian now has resources available to live above and beyond this world.  The Bible teaches that whosoever is born of God does not practice sin.  It is like the little girl who said that when the devil came knocking with a temptation, she just sent Jesus to the door.

Billy Graham

This Day's Verse

In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.

Psalm 56:11
The King James Version

This Day's Reprise

The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting; it has been found difficult and left untried.

G. K. Chesterton

This Day's Thought

Starting afresh patiently and in good cheer and hope is the mark of the Christian.  One of the helpful definitions of Christianity is this: the Christian life is a series of new beginnings.

John B. Coburn

This Day's Verse

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.  “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Isaiah 55:8-9
The New International Version

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

A Good New Year’s Resolution:
During the coming year I will go nowhere I can’t take Jesus Christ.
I will say nothing I would not want Him to hear.
I will do nothing I would not want Him to know about.
I will be the best example to others that I possibly can, for His sake.

Unknown

This Day's Verse

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

Jeremiah 29:11
The King James Version

This Day's Smile

The year is closed, the record made,
The last deed done, the last word said,
The memory alone remains
Of all its joys, its griefs, its gains,
And now with purpose full and clear,
We turn to meet another year.

Robert Browning

This Day's Thought

Entire conformity and resignation to the divine will is truly a road on which we cannot go wrong, and it is the only road that leads us to taste and enjoy that peace which sensual and earthly men know nothing of.

Philip Neri

This Day's Verse

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

John 3:17
The New International Version

This Day's Thought

The virtue of a man ought to be measured, not by his extra-ordinary exertions, but by his everyday conduct.

This Day's Thought

Did any of you, parents, ever hear your child wake from sleep with some panic fear and shriek the mother’s name through the darkness?  Was not that a more powerful appeal than all words?  And, depend upon it, that the soul which cries aloud on God, “the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,” though it have “no language but a cry.” will never call in vain.

Alexander MacLaren

This Day's Verse

The silver-haired head is a crown of glory, If it is found in the way of righteousness.

Proverbs 16:31
The New King James Version

This Day's Reprise

God writes the Gospel not in the Bible alone, but on trees, and flowers, and clouds, and stars.

This Day's Thought

Integrity is the glue that holds our way of life together.  What our young people want to see in their elders is integrity, honesty, truthfulness, and faith.  What they hate most of all is hypocrisy and phoniness.  That is why it is important for us to go to church, to read the Bible, and to say grace at the table.  Let them see us doing what we would like to see them do.

Billy Graham

This Day's Verse

And the Lord said to Moses, “This very thing that you have spoken I will do, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.”

Exodus 33:17
The English Standard Version

This Day's Smile

This Day’s Thought-Friday

Wishing you a most joyous and meaningful Christmas celebration!

This Day’s Thought

This Day's Thought

We thank Thee, O God, for the return of the wondrous spell of this Christmas season that brings its own sweet joy into our jaded and troubled hearts.  Forbid it, Lord, that we should celebrate without understanding what we celebrate, or, like our counterparts so long ago, fail to see the star or to hear the song of glorious promise.  As our hearts yield to the spirit of Christmas, may we discover that it is Thy Holy Spirit who comes—not a sentiment, but a power—to remind us of the only way by which there may be peace on the earth and good will among men.  May we not spend Christmas, but keep it, that we may be kept in its hope, through Him who emptied Himself in coming to us that we might be filled with peace and joy in returning to God.

Peter Marshall

This Day's Verse

“Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

Luke 2:14
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile

May Peace be your gift at Christmas
and your blessing all year through!

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

The simple shepherds heard the voice of an angel and found their Lamb; the wise men saw the light of a star and found their Wisdom.

Fulton Sheen

This Day's Verse

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David.  He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child.

Luke 2:4-5
The New International Version

This Day's Reprise

This old Christmas greeting from a letter written between 1387-1455

I salute you.  I am your friend, and my love for you goes deep.  There is nothing I can give you which you have not already; but there is much, very much, which though I cannot give it, you can take.  No heaven can come to us unless our hearts find rest in today.  Take heaven.  No peace lies in the future which is not hidden in this precious little instant.  Take peace.  The gloom of the world is but a shadow.  Behind it, yet within our reach, is joy.  There is radiance and courage in the darkness could we but see it; and to see, we have only to look.  Life is so generous a giver, but we, judging its gifts by their coverings, cast them away as ugly or heavy or hard.  Remove the covering, and you will find beneath it a living splendor, woven of love, and wisdom, and power.  Welcome it, greet it, and you touch the angel’s hand that brings it.

Everything we call a trial, a sorrow, a duty, believe me, that angel’s hand is there, the gift is there, and the wonder of an overshadowing Presence.  Our joys, too, be not content with them as joys.  They, too, conceal diviner gifts.  Life is so full of meaning and purpose, so full of beauty beneath its covering, that you will find earth but cloaks your heaven.  Courage, then, to claim it, that is all!  But courage you have, and the knowledge that we are pilgrims winding through unknown country our way home.

And so, at this Christmas time, I greet you, not quite as the world sends greeting, but with profound esteem now and forever.

The day breaks and the shadows flee away.

Giovanni da Fiesole
