This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

Do we know our neighbor, the poor of our own area?  It is so easy for us to talk and talk about the poor of other places.  Very often we have the suffering, we have the lonely, we have the people—old, unwanted, feeling miserable—and they are near us and we don’t even know them.  We have no time even to smile at them.  Tuberculosis and cancer are not the great diseases.  I think a much greater disease is to be unwanted, unloved.  The pain that these people suffer is very difficult to understand, to penetrate.  I think this is what our people all over the world are going through, in every family, in every home.  This suffering is being repeated in every man, woman and child.  I think Christ is undergoing his Passion again.  And it is for you and for me to help them.

Mother Teresa

This Day's Verse

Anyone who says he is a Christian but doesn’t control his sharp tongue is just fooling himself, and his religion isn’t worth much.

James 1:26
The Living Bible

This Day's Reprise

God always answers in the deeps, never in the shallows of our soul.

This Day's Thought

We are as safe at sea, safer in the storm which God sends us, than in a calm when we are befriended by the world.

Jeremy Taylor

This Day's Verse

With my mouth I will give great thanks to the Lord; I will praise him in the midst of the throng.

Psalm 109:30
The English Standard Version

This Day's Smile

The wayside pool reflects the fleeting clouds as exactly as does the mighty ocean.

This Day's Thought

No doctrine of the Christian religion is worth preserving which cannot be verified in daily life.

John T. Watson

This Day's Verse

Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.  Abstain from all appearance of evil.

1 Thessalonians 5:21-22
The King James Version

This Day's Smile

A mother was telling her six-year-old son about the Golden Rule.  “Always remember,” she said, “that we are here to help others.”  The youngster mulled this over for a minute and then asked, “Well, what are the others here for?”

This Day's Thought

Material wealth is either a window through which we see God or a mirror in which we see ourselves.

Warren Wiersbe

This Day's Verse

This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit.  And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.  If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God.  And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.

1 John 4:13-16
The New International Version

This Day's Reprise

Afflictions are but the shadow of God’s wings.

This Day's Thought

Almighty God, whose life is our true life, whose love is our love, whose joy is our joy, whose peace is our peace, whose burdens are our burdens, whose will is our will…

Thomas Kelley

This Day's Verse

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

Romans 8:1
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile

A missionary to the Appalachian mountain region of our country tells the story of having a group of children come to her home for dinner.  These were young elementary and pre-school children from the very poorest of the mountaineer families.  One little girl was utterly ravished and gobbled down everything that was set before her.  But she did not drink a drop of the huge glass of milk that was at her place.  Thinking that perhaps she did not like milk, the missionary asked her why she had not drunk any.  To which the little girl replied: “Oh, nobody told me how far down I was to drink!”  She was so used to sharing even her milk with other family members that she found it impossible to believe that it was all hers.

This Day's Thought

Religion is not a way of looking at certain things.  It is a certain way of looking at everything.

Robert E. Segal

This Day's Verse

Telling the truth gives a man great satisfaction, and hard work returns many blessings to him.

Proverbs 12:14
The Living Bible

This Day's Reprise

I study my Bible as I gather apples.  First, I shake the whole tree that the ripest might fall.  Then I shake each limb, and when I have shaken each limb, I shake each branch and every twig.  Then I look under every leaf.

Martin Luther

This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

The one who would bring others to Christ must offer them Christ with the reality of utter conviction, with the urgency of one who insists that they should choose between life and death, and with the joy of one who has made the greatest discovery in the world.

William Barclay

This Day's Verse

If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home.  For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go.

Psalm 91:9-11
The New Living Translation

This Day's Smile

“Forgiveness,” says one youngster, “Is when you leave your Dad’s saw out in the rain, and he says it was rusty anyway.”

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

Once a man is united to God how could he not live forever?  Once a man is separated from God, what can he do but wither and die?

C. S. Lewis

This Day's Verse

Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him?  As many as seven times?”  Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven.”

Matthew 18:21-22
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

The story is told of a farmer who had lived on the same farm all his life.  It was a good farm, but with the passing years the farmer began to tire of it.  He longed for a change—for something “better.”  Every day he found a new reason for criticizing some feature of the old place.  Finally, he decided to sell, and listed the farm with a real estate broker who promptly prepared a sales advertisement.  As one might expect, it emphasized all the farm’s advantages: ideal location, modern equipment, healthy stock, acres of fertile ground, and on and on.  Before placing the ad in the newspaper, the realtor called the farmer on the phone and read the copy to him for his approval.  When he had finished, the farmer cried out, “Hold everything!  I’ve changed my mind.  I am not going to sell.  I’ve been looking for a place like that all my life!”  If you’re dissatisfied with something in your life, take time to analyze it, and see what you really have.

This Day's Thought

I will not glory because I am religious,
but I will glory because I am redeemed.
I will not glory because I am free from sin,
but because my sins are forgiven.

Ambrose of Milan

This Day's Verse

He who is slow to wrath has great understanding, But he who is impulsive exalts folly.

Proverbs 14:29
The New King James Version

This Day's Reprise

It is a remarkable thing that some of the most optimistic and enthusiastic people you will meet are those who have been through intense suffering.

This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

He who never meditates, is like a person who never looks in the mirror; therefore, not knowing that he is untidy, he goes out looking disorderly.  The person who meditates and directs his thoughts to God, Who is the mirror of his soul, tries to know his faults, attempts to correct them, moderates his impulses, and puts his conscience in order.

Padre Pio

This Day's Verse

Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.  But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.

1 Peter 4:12-13
The English Standard Version

This Day's Smile

There had been a shortage of beef and the butcher placed his last roast on the scale.  “That’ll be $3.95,” he told the waiting customer.  “That one’s too small; don’t you have anything larger?” the woman asked.  The canny butcher returned the roast to the refrigerator, paused a moment, then took it out again.  “This one,” he announced, “will be $4.80.”  “Fine,” the customer said.  “I’ll take them both.”
