This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

At the Last Super, as the Master dipped the bread into the wine, and revealed that one of the disciples would betray him, the disciples did not begin by accusing one another or by saying, “Is it Judas?” Rather, they began with themselves, saying, “Is it I?”

Per Hassing

This Day's Verse

I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

Psalm 40:1
The King James Version

This Day's Reprise

I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.

C. S. Lewis

This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

I go out to preach with two propositions in mind.  First, everyone ought to give his life to Christ.  Second, whether or not anyone gives Him his life, I will give Him mine.

Jonathan Edwards

This Day's Verse

So also the Lord can rescue you and me from the temptations that surround us, and continue to punish the ungodly until the day of final judgment comes.

2 Peter 2:9
The Living Bible

This Day's Smile

The church is so subnormal that if it ever got back to the New Testament normal it would seem to people to be abnormal.

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

The purpose of life is not to find your freedom, but your master.

P. T. Forsyth

This Day's Verse

Be patient, therefore, brethren, until the coming of the Lord.  Behold, the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient over it until it receives the early and the late rain.  You also be patient.  Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.

James 5:7-8
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

I do not wish you joy without a sorrow,
— Nor endless day without the healing dark,
Nor brilliant sun without the restful shadow,
— Nor tides that never turn against your bark.
I wish you love, and strength, and faith, and wisdom,
— Goods, gold enough to help some needy one.
I wish you songs, but also blessed silence,
— And God’s sweet peace when every day is done.

This Day's Thought

Religious have no reason to be sad.  Being moody is being proud, thinking only of yourself.

Mother Teresa

This Day's Verse

And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.  For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2 Peter 1:5-8
The King James Version

This Day's Reprise

Have your heart right with Christ, and He will visit you often, and so turn weekdays into Sundays, meals into sacraments, homes into temples and earth into heaven.

C. H. Spurgeon

This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

As Thou wilt; what Thou wilt; when Thou wilt.

Thomas a Kempis

This Day's Verse

So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.

Romans 10:17
The New Living Translation

This Day's Smile

In Budapest, a man goes to the rabbi and complains, “Life is unbearable.  There are nine of us living in one room.  What can I do?”  The rabbi answers, “Take your goat into the room with you.”  The man is incredulous, but the rabbi insists.  “Do as I say and come back in a week.”  A week later the man comes back looking more distraught than before.  “We cannot stand it,” he tells the rabbi.  “The goat is filthy.”  The rabbi then tells him, “Go home and let the goat out.  And come back in a week.”  A radiant man returns to the rabbi a week later, exclaiming, “Life is beautiful.  We enjoy every minute of it now that there’s no goat—only the nine of us.”

This Day's Thought

Minimum Discipline

As one who seeks to submit his will to the will of Christ, I humbly undertake to wear His Yoke in the following ways:
The Discipline of Prayer.  To pray every day, preferably at the beginning of the day.
The Discipline of Scripture.  To read reverently and thoughtfully, every day, a portion of Scripture, following a definite plan.
The Discipline of Worship.  To share, a least once a week, in the public worship of God.
The Discipline of Money.  To give a definite portion of my annual income to the promotion of the Christian Cause.
The Discipline of Time.  To devote a specific portion of my time to ministering to the needs of others.
The Discipline of Work.  To strive to make my daily work a Christian vocation.
The Discipline of Study.  To develop my metal powers by careful reading and study.

J. A. Leatherman

This Day's Verse

In that day they will say, “Surely this is our God; we trusted in him, and he saved us.  This is the Lord, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.”

Isaiah 25:9
The New International Version

This Day's Reprise

An infinite God can give all of Himself to each of His children.  He does not distribute Himself that each may have a part, but to each one He gives all of Himself as fully as if there were no others.

This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

We ought to love what Christ loved on earth, and to set no store by those things which He regarded as of no account.

John Vianney

This Day's Verse

The Lord has made known his salvation; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations.  He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel.  All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

Psalm 98:2-3
The English Standard Version

This Day's Smile

Years ago it was the custom for the people to bring their gifts to the front of the building.  A well-known preacher was making an appeal to the people to give for a good cause.  Many came to present their offerings of love.  Among them was a little crippled girl who hobbled along a the end of the line.  Pulling a ring from her finger, she placed it on the table and made her way back up the aisle.  After the service an usher was sent to bring her to the preacher’s study.  The preacher said, “My dear, I saw what you did.  It was beautiful.  But the response of the people has been so generous that we have enough to take care of the need.  We don’t feel right about keeping your treasured ring, so we have decided to give it back to you.”  To his surprise the little girl vigorously shook her head in refusal.  “You don’t understand,” she said.  “I didn’t give my ring to you, I gave it to God!”

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

Almost every day of my life I am praying that “a jubilant pining and longing for God” might come back on the evangelical churches.  We don’t need to have our doctrine straightened out; we are as orthodox as the Pharisees of old.  But this longing for God that brings spiritual torrents and whirlwinds of seeking and self-denial—this is almost gone from our midst.

A. W. Tozer

This Day's Verse

Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.

Psalm 119:11
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile

Oh, not for more or longer days, dear Lord,
My prayer shall be—
But rather teach me how to use the days
Now given me.
I ask not more of pleasure or of joy
For this brief while—
But rather let me for the joys I have
Be glad and smile.

B. Y. Williams

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

An elderly woman was discovered in her single room in the city about a week after she had died.  With her was found a daily journal, which she had kept up to the day which she had died.  For the past six months, just one entry appeared for each day: “No one called today…no one called today.”

Alan Walker

This Day's Verse

For the Lord your God is a merciful God.  He will not leave you or destroy you or forget the covenant with your fathers that he swore to them.

Deuteronomy 4:31
The English Standard Version

This Day's Reprise

You are one of a kind—designed to glorify God as only you can.

This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

For those in the married state, the best example we can cite is that of Joachim and Anne, who every year divided their income into three equal parts.  One was for the poor, the second for the temple and the divine service, and the third for themselves.

Ignatius of Loyola

This Day's Verse

But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with him, and made us sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

Ephesians 2:4-7
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

ABUNDANT LIVING

Speak gently,
Laugh often,
Work hard,
Give freely,
Pay promptly,
Pray earnestly,
Be kind.
