This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

One belongs to the world as long as one is more ashamed of faux pas, a display of ignorance, a wrong turn of phrase, than of an unloving action.

Theodor Haecker

This Day's Verse

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teach and admonish one another in all wisdom, and sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

Colossians 3:16
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

I didn’t go to religion to make me happy.  I always knew a bottle of Port would do that.  If you want a religion to make you feel really comfortable, I certainly don’t recommend Christianity.

C. S. Lewis

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

Bibles read without prayer, sermons heard without prayer, engagements to marriage without prayer, travel undertaken without prayer, homes chosen without prayer, friendships formed without prayer, the daily act of private prayer itself hurried over or gone through without heart—these are the kind of downward steps by which many a Christian descends to a condition of spiritual paralysis, or reaches the point where God allows him to have a tremendous fall.

J. C. Ryle

This Day's Verse

Hatred stirreth up strifes; but love covereth all sins.

Proverbs 10:12
The King James Version

This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified; mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life, and peace; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord.

Book of Common Prayer

This Day's Verse

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.

1 John 5:2
The King James Version

This Day's Smile

Live simply.  Love generously.  Care deeply.  Speak kindly.  Leave the rest to God.

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

Not much evil is done by evil people.  Most of the evil is done by good people, who do not know that they are not good.

Reinhold Niebuhr

This Day's Verse

For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way, “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.”

Hebrews 4:4
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

I thirst for truth,
But shall not reach it till I reach the source.

Robert Browning

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

Though our private desires are ever so confused, though our private requests are ever so broken, and though our private groanings are ever so hidden from men, yet God eyes them, records them, and puts them upon the file of heaven, and will one day crown them with glorious answers and returns.

Thomas Brooks

This Day's Verse

Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.

Acts 2:28
The King James Version

This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

The name of Jesus is a never-failing passport to our prayers.  In that name a man may draw near to God with boldness, and ask with confidence.  God has engaged to hear him.

J. C. Ryle

This Day's Verse

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good tidings, who publishes peace, who brings good tidings of good, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”

Isaiah 52:7
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

You don’t need to know where you’re going…as long as you know the One who does.

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

God knows best what cross we need to bear, and we never know how heavy someone else’s cross may be.  We envy someone who is rich, with a cross of gold, adorned with jewels, but we do not know how heavy it is.  We look at someone whose life seems so easy and who carries a cross covered with flowers.  Yet if we could actually test all the crosses we think are lighter than ours, we would never find one better suited for us than our own.

J. R. Miller

This Day's Verse

It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.

1 Corinthians 1:30
The New International Version

This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

If you want to get warm you just stand near the fire: if you want to be wet you must get into the water.  If you want joy, power, peace, eternal life, you must get close to, or even into, the thing that has them.  They are not a sort of prize which God could, if He chose, just hand out to anyone.

C. S. Lewis

This Day's Verse

The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.

Exodus 32:16
The English Standard Version

This Day's Smile

Many books can inform, but only one will transform.

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

Only when grief finds its work done can God dispense us from it.

Henri-Frederic Amiel

This Day's Verse

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

John 14:27
The King James Version

This Day's Smile

Prayer is the burden of a sigh,
The falling of a tear,
The upward glancing of an eye
When none but God is near.

James Montgomery

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

If you aspire to be a person of consolation…to share the priestly gift of sympathy…to go beyond giving commonplace comfort to a heart that is tempted, and if you long to go through life with the kind of tact that never inflicts pain, then you must be prepared to pay the price for a costly education—for like Christ, you must suffer.

Frederick William Robertson

This Day's Verse

Ignoring what they said, Jesus told the synagogue ruler, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”

Mark 5:36
The New International Version
