This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

There are two ways of praying.  One asks and hopes; the other craves and waits until he has obtained.  It is just this “until” that characterizes the latter. One seeks God and finds Him; the other strives with God and triumphs.  The first observes seriously his daily devotions; the second stays on his knees hours a day, through the night.  The first fits in with the ordinary course of life; the second watches, fasts, cries, weeps, sweats blood.  The first we have known since we learned to know the Lord; the second…”Lord, teach us to pray.”

Monod

This Day's Verse

And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

Matthew 4:23
The King James Version

This Day's Thought

The aim of education is to make it natural for men to talk about God.

Nathan Pusey

This Day's Verse

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.  Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Romans 12:1-2
The English Standard Version

This Day's Smile

A house is built of logs and stone,
Of tiles and posts and piers;
A home is built of loving deeds
That stand a thousand years.

Victor Hugo

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

May you have the rare happiness of an undistracted, whole-hearted journey toward a goal you believe is God’s plan for your life.
May you be given strength to reject the good while searching for the best.
When you stumble and fall, may you always fall forward, toward your goal.
May you enjoy the richness of soul that is the result of seeing that your spiritual income always exceeds your expenditures.
May you enjoy the exciting fun of keeping company with the great and riding on the shoulders of giants.
May you read the best, thus spending hours with the towering souls of all ages.
As a tree continues to grow to its dying day, may you grow in wisdom and spirit as long as you live.
May you always possess your possessions; may they never possess you.
May you always have the wisdom and strength to say “No” to some things so that you can say “Yes” to other important things.
May you know the joys of fellowship with those you love, who return your love, and with those who love the things you love, to whom you look with admiration and trust and with whom you look toward the same purposes and goals. May you know the happiness that multiplies as you divide it with others.
May you be blessed with health and with the laugher that is God’s good medicine for all men.
May you have the steadying confidence that when you have, by God’s grace, done the best that is in you, you can leave the rest to Him, and to time, to determine its value.
May you find the changeless, steady values in a changeful and unsteady world, and the Eternal amidst matters that erode and vanish.
May you be blessed with a memory that is both splendid and poor; splendid in its remembrance of kindnesses you have received from God and man, and often forgetful of the benefits you have conferred on others.
May life not be too stormy, yet may you have enough clouds in your sky to make breathtaking dawns and beautiful sunsets.
May you have the joyful satisfaction of making a difference for good wherever you go.

Harold E. Kohn

This Day's Verse

I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

Galatians 2:20
The New King James Version

This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

I know I cannot enter all you feel
Nor bear with you the burden of your pain.
I can but offer what my love does give:
The strength of caring…
This I do in quiet ways
That on your lonely path
You may not walk alone.

Howard Thurman

This Day's Verse

“And if you forget the Lord your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I solemnly warn you this day that you shall surely perish.”

Deuteronomy 8:19
The Revised Standard Version

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

The greatest work any of us can do for another, whether old or young, is to teach the soul to draw its water from the wells of God.

F. B. Meyer

This Day's Verse

But Daniel made up his mind not to eat the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked the superintendent for permission to eat other things instead.

Daniel 1:8
The Living Bible

This Day's Smile

Sunshine in the morning, moonlight at night, the fragrance of gardens, the deep silence of harvest fields, the musical rattle of teacups, the laughter of happy children, the familiar tread of loved and approaching feet, a beautiful thought, a pleasant dream, a letter, a kindly greeting, a worthwhile job to do, a joke, a song, a kindness received are things which cost us nothing but enrich us beyond all telling.

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

The home atmosphere is far different when a family stops trying to walk alone, when it sees its place in the bigger scheme of things.  It works together for the things it can control, and trusts its God for guidance in problems beyond its control.  Such a family can’t help feeling closer together, more sure of itself, happier.

This Day's Verse

The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.

This Day's Thought

The purpose of all prayer is to find God’s will and to make that will our prayer.

Catherine Marshall

This Day's Verse

Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, for fear of the Lord, and for the glory of his majesty.

Isaiah 2:10
The King James Version

If God awarded us medals, as they do in the Olympics, love would win the gold, joy the silver, and peace the bronze.

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

Every moment and every event of every man’s life on earth plants something in his soul.  For just as the wind carries thousands of winged seeds, so each moment brings with it germs of spiritual vitality that come to rest imperceptibly in the minds and wills of men.

Thomas Merton

This Day's Verse

The promise to Abraham and his descendants, that they should inherit the world, did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith.

Romans 4:13
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Thought

May God send you
enough joy
to keep your hearts singing,
enough sorrow
to make you understanding,
enough hope to enrich your lives,
enough trials to keep you strong,
enough leisure
to refresh your spirits,
enough love
to make the world seem beautiful.

Dina Donohue

This Day’s Thought-Friday: George Macdonald…

This Day's Thought

There is a communion with God that asks for nothing, yet asks for everything…He who seeks the Father more than anything He can give, is likely to have what he asks, for he is not likely to ask amiss.

George Macdonald

This Day's Verse

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”
