This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

Blessings we enjoy daily; and for most of them, because they are so common, most men forget to pay their praise.  But let us not forget, for it is a sacrifice so pleasing to him that made the sun and us and gives us flowers and showers and meat and content.

Izaak Walton

This Day's Verse

The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.

Psalm 147:11
The King James Version

This Day's Smile

Prepare and prevent instead of repair and repent.

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

By the quality of our inner lives I do not mean something characterized by ferocious intensity and strain.  I mean rather such a humble and genial devotedness as we find in the most loving of the saints.  I mean the quality which makes contagious Christians, makes people catch the love of God from you.

Evelyn Underhill

This Day's Verse

So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.  What can mere mortals do to me?”

Hebrews 13:6
The New International Version

This Day's Smile

Don’t like how you were born?
Try being born again.

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

Acquire the habit of speaking to God as if you were alone with God.  Speak with familiarity and confidence as to your dearest and most loving friend.  Speak of your life, your plans, your troubles, your joys, your fears.  In return, God will speak to you—not that you will hear audible words in your ears, but words that you will clearly understand in your heart.

Alphonsus Liguori

This Day's Verse

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way.

Psalm 37:23
The New King James Version

This Day's Reprise

A good marriage is the union of two forgivers.

Ruth Graham

This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

The serene, silent beauty of a holy life is the most powerful influence in the world, next to the might of God.

Blaise Pascal

This Day's Verse

For all things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God.

2 Corinthians 4:15
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile

Things do not always work out…God works out all things.

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

The truth is that the only key to the Christian life is the life of Christ; that the only solution to the many problems that thicken round our lives as we live them is to be found in the study of His life as He lived it; and that we shall never begin to understand what we ourselves are until we have begun to understand what He is.

R. H. J. Steuart

This Day's Verse

But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

Matthew 5:44
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Reprise

I never knew how to worship until I knew how to love.

Henry Ward Beecher

This Day's Thought

When the eyes of the soul looking out meet the eyes of God looking in, heaven has begun right here on this earth.

A. W. Tozer

This Day's Verse

Keep therefore the words of this covenant, and do them, that ye may prosper in all that ye do.

Deuteronomy 29:9
The King James Version

This Day's Smile

A Sunday school teacher was dramatically telling the story of Abraham and Isaac and making it exciting.  As she described the wood being stacked on the altar and Isaac being placed atop the pyre, one little girl nervously began to cry.  “I don’t want to hear any more,” she said.  But the girl next to her nudged her and said, “Don’t get worried.  This is one of God’s stories, and God’s stories always come out all right.”

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

If sinners be dammed, at least let them leap to Hell over our bodies.  If they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees.  Let no one go there unwarned and unprayed for.

C. H. Spurgeon

This Day's Verse

Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the word of his servant?  Let the one who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the Lord and rely on their God.

Isaiah 50:10
The New International Version

This Day's Smile

A woman came up to the pastor at the end of the service and said, “That was a wonderful sermon, Pastor, absolutely wonderful.”  She gushed on about the brilliance of the sermon.  The pastor, a little embarrassed, demurred softly, “Well, it wasn’t me.  It was the Lord.”  “Oh, it wasn’t that good!” the woman replied.

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

I am afraid we modern Christians are long on talk and short on conduct.  We use the language of power but our deeds are the deeds of weakness.  We settle for words in religion because deeds are too costly.  It is easier to pray, “Lord, help me to carry my cross daily” than to pick up the cross and carry it; but since the mere request for help to do something we do not actually intend to do has a certain degree of religious comfort, we are content with repetition of the words.

A. W. Tozer

This Day's Verse

To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

Acts 26:18
The King James Version

This Day's Reprise

Prayer enlarges the heart until it is capable of containing God’s gift of himself.

Mother Teresa

This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

For a small reward, a man will hurry away on a long journey; while for eternal life, many will hardly take a single step.

Thomas a Kempis

This Day's Verse

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Psalm 103:2-5
The English Standard Version

This Day's Smile

Beware you be not swallowed up on books!  An ounce of love is worth a pound of knowledge.

John Wesley

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

We have forgotten that evil is infectious, as infectious as smallpox; and we do not perceive that if we allow whole departments of our life to become purely secular, and to create and maintain moral or immoral standards on their own, in time the whole of life is bound to become corrupt.

G. A. Studdert Kennedy

This Day's Verse

And without faith it is impossible to please him. For whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

Hebrews 11:6
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Reprise

Just as there comes a warm sunbeam into every cottage window, so comes a love—born of God’s care for every separate need.
