This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

When I was hungry, you gave me food to eat.
When I was thirsty, you gave me your cup to drink.
Whatsoever you do to the least of these of my children, that you do unto me.
Now enter the house of my Father.
When I was homeless, you opened your doors.
When I was naked, you gave me your coat.
When I was weary, you helped me find rest.
When I was anxious, you calmed my fears.
When I was little, you taught me to read.
When I was lonely, you gave me your love.
When I was in prison, you came to my cell.
When on a sick bed, you cared for my needs.
In a strange country, you made me at home.
Seeking employment, you found me a job.
Hurt in a battle, you bound up my wounds.
Searching for kindness, you held out your hand.
When I was a Negro or Chinese or White,
Mocked and insulted you carried my cross.
When I was aged, you bothered to smile.
When I was restless, you listened and cared.
You saw me covered with spittle and blood,
You knew my features, though grimy with sweat.
When I was laughed at, you stood by my side.
When I was happy, you shared in my joy.

Mother Teresa

This Day's Verse

“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord.  “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.  In those days when you pray, I will listen.  If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me.”

Jeremiah 29:11-13
The New Living Translation

This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

If Christians followed the teachings of a benign dead man, their lives would display an innocuous piety.  But when Christians stand up for righteousness and justice, they evidence the power of the living God.

Charles Colson

This Day's Verse

Lift up your eyes to the heavens, look at the earth beneath; the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment and its inhabitants die like flies.  But my salvation will last forever, my righteousness will never fail.

Isaiah 51:6
The New International Version

This Day's Smile

Sin wouldn’t be so attractive if the wages were paid immediately.

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

Wealth and riches, that is, an estate above what sufficeth our real occasions and necessities, is in no other sense a blessing than as it is an opportunity put into our hands by the providence of God, of doing more good.

John Tillotson

This Day's Verse

“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

John 4:24
The Revised Standard Version

This Day's Smile

Good morning, theologians!  You wake and sing.  But I, old fool, know less than you and worry over everything, instead of simply trusting in the heavenly Father’s care.

Martin Luther, talking to the birds as he walks through the woods

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

Worship services in many churches today are like a merry-go-round.  You drop a token in the collection box; it’s good for a ride.  There’s music and lots of motion up and down.  The ride is carefully timed and seldom varies in length.  Lots of good feelings are generated, and it is the one ride you can be sure will never be the least bit threatening or challenging.  But though you spend the whole time feeling as if you’re moving forward, you get off exactly where you got on.

John MacArthur

This Day's Verse

May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through.  May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24
The New International Version

This Day's Thought

The next moment is as much beyond our grasp, and as much in God’s care, as that a hundred years away.  Care for the next minute is just as foolish as care for a day in the next thousand years.  In neither can we do anything, in both God is doing everything.

C. S. Lewis

This Day's Verse

But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.

Romans 5:8
The Living Bible

This Day's Smile

The young people of today think of nothing but themselves.  They have not reverence for parents or old age.  They are impatient of all restraint.  They talk as if they know everything, and what passes for wisdom with us is foolishness to them.

Peter the monk, 1274

This Day’s Thought-Tuesday

This Day's Thought

Religion is not ours till we live by it, till it is the religion of our thoughts, words, and actions, till it goes with us into every place, sits uppermost on every occasion, and forms and governs our hopes and fears, our cares and pleasures.

William Law

This Day's Verse

Every good endowment and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

James 1:17
The Revised Standard Version

This Day’s Thought-Monday

This Day's Thought

Work with all your might, but never trust in your work.  Pray with all your might for the blessing in God, but work at the same time with all diligence, with all patience, with all perseverance.  Pray, then, and work.  Work and pray.  And still again pray, and then work.

George Muller

This Day's Verse

Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name; Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

Psalm 29:2
The New King James Version

This Day's Smile

They might not need me; but they might.
I’ll let my head be just in sight;
A smile as small as mine might be
Precisely their necessity.

Emily Dickinson

This Day’s Thought-Friday

This Day's Thought

True wisdom is gazing at God.  Gazing at God is silence of the thoughts.

Isaac the Syrian

This Day's Verse

For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.

1 Corinthians 14:33
The English Standard Version

This Day's Smile

There is no gain except by loss;
There is no life except by death;
There is no vision but by faith.

This Day’s Thought-Thursday

This Day's Thought

You are ever active, yet always at rest.
You gather all things to yourself, though you suffer no need.
You grieve for wrong, but suffer no pain.
You can be angry and yet serene.
Your works are varied, but your purpose is one and the same.
You welcome those who come to you, though you never lost them.
You are never in need yet are glad to gain, never covetous yet you exact a return for your gifts.
You release us from our debts, but you lose nothing thereby.
You are my God, my Life, my holy Delight, but is this enough to say of you?
Can any man say enough when he speaks of you?
Yet woe betide those who are silent about you!

Augustine

This Day's Verse

“Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”

Revelation 4:8
The Revised Standard Version

This Day’s Thought-Wednesday

This Day's Thought

There is great joy in learning now about the God with whom we will spend eternity.

JoNancy Linn Sundberg

This Day's Verse

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.  Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

2 Corinthians 9:6-7
The English Standard Version

This Day's Smile

We grow by subtraction.

Meister Eckhart
